Dear Listers, This is an attempt to sort out some of the SARGEANTs/SEARGEANTs of Louisa Co., VA. In the 1850 Census of Louisa Co. all of these families' names are spelled "Seargeant." In "Dwlg" (presumably abreviation for dwelling) #1005 is William SEARGEANT, 82 y.o. M farmer, with 77 y.o. wife, Elizabeth and 45 y.o. daughter, Mary. In the next Dwlg. #1006, probably adjacent property, is William B. SEARGEANT, 60 y.o. M laborer, with 50 y.o. wife, Sarah, and 17 y.o.daughter Mary E., 13, 10 and 7 y.o. sons, Andrew, James and William. Not far away in Dwlg. #938 is Martha SEARGEANT, 75 y.o. F, with probably 52 y.o. daughter, Sarah, and probably 18 y.o. granddaughter, Susan. In the next Dwig. #937 is my great great grandfather Nathaniel Seargeant, 46 y.o. M asst. farmer and his wife, Louisa A. (maiden name unknown) 38 y.o F, with their daughters, Mary C. and Christiana ages 16 and 4, and sons William J., Nathaniel R., Henry H.(for Hastings)(my great grandfather), and Ruben L., ages 19, 14, 9 and 6 respectively. Nathaniel SEARGEANT and Louisa A. SEARGEANT obtained a marriage bond on 14 Jan 1828 and surety was provided by William SEARGEANT. The marriage certificate filed in Circuit Court of Albemarle Co., VA for their son Henry H. SARGEANT and (Mary) Walker BURNHAM, who were married 2 June 1868, lists his parents as Natt and Louisa. From this time on, the spelling of the surname has remained SARGEANT in the descendants. The will of Nathaniel SEARGEANT made on 10 March 1876 and proved 14 August 1876 in court by his wife, Louisa A. SEARGEANT, executrix, lists their children as William J. SEARGEANT, Mary C. KING (her married name), Henry H. SEARGEANT and youngest son, Koskinsco SEARGEANT. Presumably Koskinsco was born after the 1850 census. Why the other children, Nathaniel R., Ruben L., and Christiana are not mentioned in the will is not known at this time. The will of William SEARGEANT made on 2 Dec 1853 provided extra money for his daughter Mary SEARGEANT who was probably the unmarried daughter that stayed home and looked after William and his wife, Elizabeth for whom he also provided. He left 1/8th of his estate to his daughter Sarah SEARGEANT, but not subject to debts of her husband William B. SEARGEANT and 1/8th to his daughter Susan SEARGEANT, but not subject to debts of her husband John T. SEARGEANT. (These provisions suggest that Sarah and Susan married cousins named SEARGEANT.) Sarah is the wife of the William B. SEARGEANT in the Louisa Co. census of 1850, but the only Susan SEARGEANT listed is age 18 living with another Sarah, age 52, and Martha, age 75, so presumably Susan and John T. SEARGEANT named in the will were liviing in another county. This will also provided for John P. SEARGEANT, Hastings SEARGEANT, William S. SEARGEANT, Henrietta LOVING, and Louisa SEARGEANT. In a codicil to the will made 30 Oct 1857, he named his son, William S. SEARGEANT executer of the estate. The will was proved in court on 9 April 1860 and the widow, Elizabeth SEARGEANT, age 80 +, declared incompetent to act as administratrix of the estate due to age and "imbecility of mind." A bond for security was recorded for William S. SEARGEANT, Nathaniel SEARGEANT, Samuel O. BUNCH and Benjamin S. WALDROP. William H. LOVING was a witness to signing of the will and present at its' proving. His possible relationship to the beneficiary, Henrietta LOVING, is unkown. Is this Nathaniel SEARGEANT, posting bond, and Louisa SEARGEANT, beneficiary, the same husband and wife as the family listed above who are also the parents of Henry Hastings SEARGEANT and is the Hastings SEARGEANT mentioned in this will the same as Henry H. SEARGEANT? How are Nathaniel SEARGEANT and William SEARGEANT (of the 2 wills) related? A marriage bond was posted in Louisa Co. 16 Dec 1793 for a Nathaniel SARGEANT and Patsy BOYD which was carried out on 19 Dec 1793 by the Rev. Richard Pope and witnessed by John SARGEANT. Is this Nathaniel SARGEANT the brother of the William SEARGEANT of the will? If William was 82 y.o. in 1850, he would have been born about 1768 compatible in time with Nathaniel as a possible brother. Can anyone out there help put this family together?
