Hi Bev, I also have had an experience with "inmate" describing one or more children. Below you will find my g-gf's family from the 1860 Louisa Census, and Robert and others are listed as "Inmate". This record can be found on image 835. (I wrote the relationship for the people listed). Also, Robert E. was killed four years later, during the Civil War, at Spotsylvania Courthouse.
