According to "The Brooks of Virginia" by Bruce Edwards (who died in 1991) James BROOKS was the s/o Elkanna BROOKS (1791 - 1880) & Sabra LOYDE. He says, "James BROOKS was born in 1821, possibly late 1820, and was about 20 when he married Caroline WILSHIRE in Goochland County on 15 December 1840. His father gave his consent, as he was not yet of age. He took his bride back to Louisa County where they proceeded to raise a large family of eleven children over the years!" The account of the family goes on. He says Elkanna was born in 1791 and married Sabra LOYDE on 10 Nov 1818. She was the d/o Thomas LOYDE. Elkanna was the s/o John BROOKS & Nancy ATKISSON who were married 28 Oct 1790. Hope this helps, Ruby Talley Smith
