    3. Marie - Its my understanding after doing research in Virginia for a LONG time (don't want to give away all my secrets) that Lord and Lady Fairfax died in England. He returned at the beginning of the American Revolution. Also, their home was much closer to Mt. Vernon than to Fairfax - something makes me think that it is near Ft. Belvoir... Actually I think I learned this reading a recent history about Mary Washington - I know that they were 'neighbors' of Lord and Lady Fairfax (who died young), and often visited by carriage or horseback - and its a LONG carriage ride from Mt. Vernon to Braddock Rd. I lived right on Braddock Rd. in Fairfax, almost on the Springfield line, in an old pre WWI farmhouse that we partially restored (ran out of $)... on an acre of land. We had to buy since renting was so expensive! But the school system was the best! Diane

    1. [VALOUISA] Sheriff Thomas Johnson and Quarles family
    2. Jay Lieske
    3. Many thanks to Ruby for the information about Sheriff Thomas Johnson. My wife descends through his daughter Rebecca Johnson who married Joseph Winston. Their daughter Mary Johnson Winston (1804-1866) married John Todd Quarles (1805-1866), who was the son of John Quarles and Rebecca Minor. This John Quarles, by the way, was the brother of the Anne Quarles who was first married to Henry Washington and was the mother of Anne Catherine Harriet Washington that Ruby notes was married to Thomas Johnson sheriff's son. John and Anne Quarles were the children of James Quarles and Mary Pryor. James Quarles lived in Albemarle County (and was member of the Committee of Safety and sheriff for Albemarle) and then moved to Fluvanna County. He and son Robert Quarles were in the Revolutionary War. Does anyone know where this John Todd Quarles and wife Mary Johnson Winston are buried? They lived just across the river in Orange County on their plantation called "Woodlawn" but I've never been able to locate their graves. The Quarles family history was rather sad, both parents dying in 1866 (obit written by John Todd Quarles's nephew Gen William A. Quarles). John and Mary's children John Minor Quarles and Virginia Minor Quarles both died in July 1864 of typhus --I suspect after battle of Trevilians. Their brother Mercer Winston Quarles also died in July 1864. He was a physician and is buried in Louisa, but I have never been able to locate the family plot on "Woodlawn" where the parents John Todd Quarles and Mary Johnson Winston and their two children are buried. Many thanks. Jay Lieske

    3. Don't you love progress. This happened to a family cemetery down the road from me last year. Our Township Historical Society (Beavercreek, Ohio) and the parks board worked out a deal with the developer to have all the stones , fence and what ever was underground moved into another pioneer cemetery that wasn't too far. The Historical Society and I searched around using the web to find relatives for about a year while all the paper work was being processed. I had been on the cemetery board. The developer insisted it had to be moved because the remains were on the best lot overlooking the valley. On the other hand ,when we lived in Fairfax , Virginia ,Lord and Lady Fairfax were still buried in someone's back yard in our development off Braddock Road and the developer had laid out the plans to not disturb the remains. Better plan. I'll help you search for someone but it probably won't help if the county gives them the go ahead. Would he be the one connected to Roundabout Castle She was born about 1786 and married Elisha Pace of Fluvanna Co.Va on Oct. 22, 1806 in Louisa Co.Va They had several children, one of whom was a Hudson Pace. They moved West later with several of their children. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wayne Dunn" <WayneDunn@comcast.net> To: <valouisa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 04, 2007 10:52 PM Subject: Re: [VALOUISA] ROUNDABOUT CASTLE > Hi Ruby, > > I just got home & approved your email w/attachment, but I see it didn't come > through. 1. [VALOUISA] R. G. & Ella Thomasson
    2. Pat Baber
    3. Is anybody on the list researching the R. G. & Ella Thomasson family? I have no information on them, but I am concerned that developers are moving a cemetery that is on property once owned by them. R. G. Thomasson bought the land November 23, 1877. The cemetery is reserved in a deed dated 30 Sept. 1916, but the land has been sold to a developer for a subdivision and there is a legal ad in the Central Virginian that any interested parties need to respond before June 16th. Witnesses to the deed were Ivy L. Thomasson, Ruby V. Parrish, Ethel T. Hardenburgh, M. R. Hardenburgh, and Hallie G. Thomasson. I hope to find the cemetery before that date and, at least, document and photograph it before they "relocate" all the tombstones (if there are any). I had the same thing to happen to one of my family cemeteries in Williamsburg and their idea of "relocating it to a more suitable repository" was dumping everything, "substantial evidence of an ancient cemetery" in a hole at the edge of the property. It took me years for find out where they had relocated my cemetery to. I hate to see this happen to somebody else. If you need more information, please contact me.
