Well, I'm stumped, and I guess you can help me more than I can help you. The only possible Polly Chiles I find is Polly Tisdale who married John Chiles and was the mother of Fendol Chiles, who lived in Louisa County. Could John have died and Polly (Tisdale) Chiles remarried to your Stephen Houchins? As for a "Julie Chiles", I do not have one. In "Meriwether Smith's book", which appears to have been passed down to his Eggleston grandsons, he repeatedly refers to his wife as "Judith", never even "Judy", let alone "Julie". Have you the reference to the land sale of Meriwether Smith and a Julie, please? The Judith I have died 6 June, 1818, a date which may help clarify, I hope. The Jefferson-Fry map of Virginia also is a good resource--it was drawn by Thomas Jefferson's father and can be seen here: _http://www.vcdh.virginia.edu/lewisandclark/students/projects/adventurers/documents/fryjeffmap_titlepage.html_ (http://www.vcdh.virginia.edu/lewisandclark/students/projects/adventurers/documents/fryjeffmap_titlepage.html) I trust you can figure out how to blow it up to examine more closely yourself. I have a copy of the map framed on the wall near my computer and have consulted it frequently. Ken Thompson is right. There is a tie-in of Louisa Co. and Hanover Co. Louisa Co. was formed from Hanover Co. in 1740. In fact, the first pages of Louisa Co. records, transcribed by Mrs. Rosalie Edith Davis of Manchester, MO makes reference to MANY Hanover Co. families. A good thing--because so many Hanover Co. records burned during the *evacuation fire* in Richmond (State Archives) at the end of the Civil War. If persons are serious about research in early Louisa Co., VA, I highly recommend the purchase of some inexpensive books by Mrs. Davis. Her webpage: _http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/_ (http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/) One will find a goodly number of Albemarle Co. names in the Louisa Co. transcripts of early date. One noted genealogist/author/lecturer/ historian of Salt Lake City area recommends this: If you are researching in Virginia, research ALL the counties. She, I discovered, is right. Another genealogist recommends this: Study the associates [the in-laws, the cousins, the neighbors] and the watercourses. All the land grants, for the most part, mention a watercourse which may no longer exist, of course!!! E.W.Wallace ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Louisa Co. was formed in 1742 from Hanover County. Your family member could not have born in Louisa Co. earlier than that. Hanover Co. records are largely missing, but some church records and a few court records still survive. But don't forget the surrounding counties. Knowing the genealogy of counties is VERY important. My book entitled ATLAS OF COUNTY BOUNDARY CHANGES IN VIRGINIA 1634-1895 by Michael F. Doran is getting dog-eared. I recommend that if you are doing a LOT of Virginia research [most Southerners have Virginia roots, at least some of them], I highly recommend you try to acquire this book before the price goes up. My copy was published by Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, GA in 1987. Iberian Publishing Co. no longer has that name. The current name is New Papyrus Co., Athens, GA. _www.genealogyresources.org_ (http://www.genealogyresources.org) Doing without a few Starbucks overpriced products may help you purchase this book. VERY useful if you are serious about genealogical research. Each day products made of plastic and paper go up in price, not to mention food. Many subscribers are currently asking for look-ups in Old Homes of Louisa Co. They just drop in names, some marriages, but NO DATES. Tsk! Tsk! Some of us who have researched Louisa Co. in colonial days may have some notes to share with you, but if you give no dates, how can one help you? I am mostly deleting--FAST--such queries. The Family History Library gives this information about Louisa Co., where one must search the early records to find early Hanover Co. folks: Formed in 1742 from Hanover County When a subscriber posts a query, could he/she drop in a date???? Are you referring to a family who was in Louisa in 1742 or 1942 or 2007? Makes a difference in what kind of response you may get. There are several pages of BAILEY in the book. I will scan them and send them when I have time. I am pretty swamped right now. Do you remember me? We have a Valley Forge connection as I recall. Ruby Talley Smith ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Hi! I show Nathan Talley born in Hanover Co., Va. ca. 1740, and later moving to Louisa Co. Later, one of his sons, George Talley, married Sarah "Sally" Cole, daughter of Wm. Cole and Eleanor Bibb. Still later on, George Talley and Sarah, his wife, had a daughter Sarah in 1810 in Louisa. This young Sarah married my third great-grandfather, Archibald Wyatt Thompson. It does look like there were some connections between Hanover and Louisa. And certainly lots of inter-connections with many families in the area, as so many families were so very large. Ken Thompson.

Please, could you look in the Old Homes of Louisa Co for the home of: Meriwether Smith, d. 1823, in Louisa, and his wife, Judith Woodson Chiles Smith, d. 1818, in Louisa. or their daughter and son-in-law: Sally Mildred Smith and Joseph Carr Eggleston (they married 7 February, 1822, in Louisa) I believe that Meriwether Smith's home was close to that of William F. Toler, but I do not know for certain. Thank you. Anna --------------------------------- Now that's room service! Choose from over 150,000 hotels in 45,000 destinations on Yahoo!
