The two books that have been published were taken from a registry prepared by the Library of Virginia years ago. They prepared the registry from the original bonds and included all the information that was included in the bonds. Really the only thing gained by having copies of the original bonds is seeing actual signatures of the parties who signed. Most of the early bonds are on bits of paper and had written - not a form filled out. Sorry but there is no more information than what is in the published books. As you can tell from the dates of the books I listed the bonds from 1742 when the county was formed from Hanover until 1766 are missing.

To Cathy, My Harlow family was out of Virginia by about 1810 Can't help you with Virginia connections after that. To Ray, I am putting all the early Virginia Harlow's together because of lost info on the computer. I want to put different families together. I am looking for Thomas Harlow's parents who both came from VA. Thomas was born about 1812 KY. His father may have been Edmund Harlow or about 3 others. I am narrowing it down. I have many census images for VA but the chid was not born there so I'm having a hard time. I have searched in KY (Shelby & Henry Co) but cannot find the right paperwork for Thomas. Hi Donna, It can vary, particularly with the date range you are looking at. It can be anything from a hand-written permission from the parents to a form with a lot of information. I have seen a variety of information. At the least, it should have the name of the bride and the groom and the person swearing the bond that the marriage will take place in a brief amount of time, and if, for some reason, it doesn't take place, they will pay the amount of the bond. Often you will learn the names of close family friends and the like, in the form of who witnessed the bond. :-) Don't ask me the LOGIC of a bond, but that has been my experience. I have see hand-written permissions connected to the page of bonds/licenses in some courthouses. It can be almost comical at times. Something like, "Grooms father ______ appeared before magistrate and gave permission on _____ for the marriage of his daughter ____ to marry ____." So....it is a mixed bag. You might get a LOT of info, and you might not get much... Janice. I believe the information about the marriage of a John Pace and Elizabeth Smith or Swift came from a book. Are you saying I could contact the Louisa county Courthouse and there may be more information on their background on papers relative to the bond.? John R.Pace b. 1809 m. elizbeth? had been found thru DNA testing of the Pace Society to be a descendent of John Pace of Middlesex, Va in the 1600's and then back to England. I have a note posted by Alice Owens, a Fluvanna Co researcher in Nov. 2004 on Harlow Forum as follows:: There is a marriage in Albemarle 1799 of Elizabeth Harlow to James Robinson. This same Elizabeth Robinson is an heir(daughter) of Nathaniel Harlow whose will was recorded in Albemarle Co. Va in 1816. I am a descendent of John R.Pace b.1809 and his wife Elizabeth? b. abt. 1815. possibly in Louisa co. as there was a marriage between an Elizabeth Smith or Swift and a John Pace in Louisa County. A John Anderson was the Sur. They lived in Fluvanna near a Nathaniel Harlow Their son John Walker Pace b. 1843 married Rebecca Ann Robinson b. 1853, dau of David Robinson b. abt. 1789. Could there be a connection to Elizabeth Harlow who married a Robinson.? I have also seen a Harlow-Robinson marriage with the name Tancy.
