Please tell me what you may know about Meriwether Smith and Judith Woodson Chiles Smith. My grgrandfather John Pace b. 1809 was possibly married to an Elizabeth Smith b. abt. 1816. T hey were married in Louisa County. The Woodson and Chiles families may also have an connection to my Pace family which thru DNA study of The Pace Society has been shown to have a connection to John Pace Of Middlesex, va in the 1600;s and then back to England. 1830 Census of Louisa County shows a Micajah Ogg with his family. His wife's name would have been Elizabeth (unknown maiden name). Children would have been Robert Samuel, Sarah Elizabeth, and George W. Does anyone know Micajah's father's name? This is my big brick wall!!! Darlene Johns
Thanks to well-known author Janice L. Abercrombie, who has abstracted MANY deeds of Louisa Co., Va and has allowed them to be posted on the internet. Ms. Abercrombie is the author of several books of early Virginia. Check out this URL. Remove any punctuation which may have been added at the beginning and end of URL _http://trevilians.com/deeds/deedmain.htm_ (http://trevilians.com/deeds/deedmain.htm) Be aware that Louisa Co. was formed from Hanover Co., VA in 1742. There are many references in these online abstracted deeds to residents of Hanover Co., some indicating family relationships. Look for ALL your surnames - there is an index with links, thank goodness -- plus look for ALL the neighbors of your families. They may have connections to the women in your ancestry. As one well-known genealogist-lecturer-author says, Round up all the usual suspects. And he urges, go over and over your notes. My, am I finding some missing relatives that way!!! Another well-known author-genealogist-lecturer says, Do a mini-census! Here is a late deed involving a number of Harrises, apparently linked to one Frederick Harris, who probably [not proved by me] is linked to William Harris and Temperance Overton. (What do you think?) Book: J, Page: 633, Grantor: Nicholas Mills, Grantee: William Mills, Date: 22-Nov-1803 Nicholas Mills to William Mills, whereas Nicholas Mills dec'd. late of Hanover Co. the father of said Nicholas and William Mills departed this life about 1800 possessed of sundry tracts of land in counties of Hanover and Louisa to wit. a tract in Hanover where he resided at the time of his death containing 350 acres on Little River, one tract in Louisa on Christophers Run cont. 1200 acres adjoining John Carpenter dec'd., Isham Watkins, the lands where Edmond Dear lived at time of his death, Charles Dickenson and others. Whereas Nicholas and William Mills purchased of George Harris 275 acres in Louisa on Little River being part of land Frederick Harris dec'd. adjoining sd. Harris, Charles Harris, William Toler, Mrs. Baker and Overton Harris which land was deeded by said George Harris to Nicholas and William Mills and is now recorded in Louisa. Nicholas Mills dec'd. departed this life intestate and leaving no other children. For $1 William Mills sells to Nicholas Mills all his title to land in Hanover whereon Nicholas Mills dec'd. lived cont. 350 acres and Nicholas sells to William the land of Nicholas dec'd. on Christophers Run in Louisa containing 1200 acres and also all his moiety in the 275 acres purchased of Harris. Wit. Charles Thompson, John R. Chick, Garland Thompson. Rec. 12 Dec 1802. (Janice L. Abercrombie, from website at _http://trevilians.com/deeds/deedmain.htm_ (http://trevilians.com/deeds/deedmain.htm) ) My comment: Were I searching any of these Harrises, I would also look for the names of these particular Harris males (and their associates and neighbors during these decades) in the Virginia land records on the Library of Virginia website--or in my trustworthy (most of the time) eight volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers. And, again, note their neighbors. Submitted by E.W.Wallace ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Can anyone in the Louisa Co. area have any info on a James Carter marrying a Judy Wade in 1807? Any Carter info from that area would be appreciated. Thank you. Nancy
Dear Christine, You wrote: I think some of the identity confusion about William Harris, and others, in deeds recorded in Louisa and Albemarle stems in part from the fact that, from 1742 until 1761, Fredericksville Parish, the northeastern half of what is now Albemarle Co., was the westmost part of Louisa Co. Here's a link on this subject: http://listlva.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0608&L=va-hist&P=2299 So when Robert Harris and his sons patented land at Doyle's River, Mechum's, Moorman's, Rocky Creek, Buck's Elbow, etc... west of modern-day Charlottesville, it was considered Louisa Co. But these locations are nowhere near the Little River, North Anna, Cubb Creek, or South Anna of eastern Louisa Co., where other Williams were conducting land transactions both earlier and later in the 1700's. As to William, son of Robert Harris of Doyle's River (Harris YDNA group 6), I think that the deed of 8 May 1777 Albemarle Co. to Thomas Garth pretty well identifies William as deceased by 1777 with a widow Elizabeth (probably Michie) and a brother Christopher married to Agnes. The Mechams River location is consistent with the general area in which his father and brothers had land, so I suspect the other Albemarle deeds referencing that location also apply to him. But the 1764 and 1771 Amherst Co. deeds relating to Rockfish Creek more likely refer to a different William Harris, son of William and Mary (Netherland) Harris also of Albemarle Co. (Harris YDNA group 7). This family seems to have come from York Co. early in the 1700's and patented lands in southwestern Albemarle Co. and into Amherst Co. The Louisa Co. deeds of 1778 and later seem to refer to at least two more Williams, one with wife Elizabeth, and another with wife Henrietta. The William Harris with wife Henrietta (Baker) is usually said to be "William III", son of "William Jr" and Elizabeth (Burnett) Harris, and grandson of William and Temperance (Overton) Harris. The William with wife Elizabeth is sometimes said to be William Jr, but there are other possibilities and I haven't so far sorted it out. In this time frame there are other Louisa Co. Williams to consider, like "Capt William Harris" of Hickory Creek, in NW Louisa Co., who is reported to have married Mary Hudson. Then there is William Harris, of Great Rocky Creek, in NE Louisa Co., deceased before 1800, a probable son of a John Harris, and related to Micajah and Esther Harris. And just a little further east over the line into Hanover Co. are William Harris of Wolf Swamp, and William Harris, son of Overton Harris of Cedar Hill, who is presumably another decendent of William and Temperance (Overton) Harris. Christine Schomaker My response: Thank you so much for shedding some light on the various William Harrises. We Harris-Hunters need all the help we can get. It is so helpful, indeed, to have the maiden names of their wives. You believe Elizabeth, the widow of William Harris, son of Major Robert Harris, was Michie. That makes sense to me. I am trying to send a message to several lists of my notes on some of the Harrises, but my notes are so long, that the administrators are holding my messages. I expect I shall have to divide into installments. I certainly invite corrections, additions, etc. Because of your knowledge of some of these various colonial Harrises, do you have any inkling of whether Elizabeth (unknown) may have remarried? I am certain her family had to have lived near the Harrises, or else was related to some degree to the larger family. It would help me immensely if I knew the geography of Virginia somewhat better. I have a DeLorme atlas, which helps somewhat, but many of the watercourses I seek are either not indexed, or have disappeared over the years. And, of course, the county boundaries, as you indicate, have changed over the years. Thanks for helping to set us straight. I am searching for a connection to John and Zada Crawford who lived in the Green Spring District of Louisa Co. Virginia in the 1920 and 1930 census. I am not sure if John's middle name is Saylor or Sell. John was born ca. August 1872 in Rockingham Co. and died May 31, 1938 in Louisa Co. John married Zada Lee "Zaidie" Crawford who was born August 1881 and died Oct 9, 1938. She was the daughter of Henry Crawford. I know of five children: Aubrey Willard/Willis; Bernard Lee, Cecil Dudley, Christine E who married Charles B. Davis, and Mary Lee. I am also searching for William A. Crawford who was born ca. Aug. 1875 in Rockingham Co., Virginia and died Jan. 1899. He married Jeanetta "Jennie" ______. Jennie may have been the daughter of Ira Crawford and Hardenia Bellomy. William and Jennie were married in Albermarle Co. and lived in Albemarle Co. in 1900 but were living in the Green Spring District of Louisa Co., Virginia in April 1910 during the 1910 census. They later went to Alexandria City, Virginia during the 1930 census. William and Jennie had six known children: George H. born Jan 1900, Mary B. born ca. 1901, Flora L. born ca. 1903, William A. born ca. 1905, Lottie L. born ca. 1908 and Erma born ca. 1913. If anyone connects to any of these lines, please contact me at philly330@verizon.net. Thank you, C. Phillips
