We have had much discussion on Pat's book, and I hope I can get it in the second printing. Are there other books that you have found to be helpful in researching or just learning about Louisa County? I still own some of the land where my Pace ancestors lived in Fluvanna since 1822 , I was told. Thru the DNA study of the Pace Society, it has been found that we are descendents of John Pace of Middlesex and earlier ancestors in England. I know that my grandfather and Uncle are both buried there somewhere. They both died about 1910 My Uncle Overton Ashby Pace was murdered in December, 1910. There was a trial later. I was not born then, so details were very sketchy, handed down by my Mother, Vera Pace, who witnessed it. There is a new development called Sycamore Square just beside the land on which they lived and I am concerned about finding the graves and preserving them.Is there such a law about that in Virginia? We have had much discussion on Pat's book, and I hope I can get it in the second printing. Are there other books that you have found to be helpful in researching or just learning about Louisa County? Warmest Regards, Donna
Thanks Linda! I am hoping that Pat's graveyard book might shed light on the gravesites of my 3rd gr grandparents---- John Henry Buck & Lucy Colvin, who died in the 1830s. Besides Buck & Colvin, my other family names are Estes, Timberlake, Fletcher, [Ursula] Rowe, [Jean] Peers. Could someone please check on these from Louisa Co & say yea or nay? [I know there is a Colvin cemetery in Culpeper Co, but I'm wondering about Louisa Co. I have a big brick wall with Lucy Colvin.] Of course, about every really old family in Hanover / Louisa Cos are "allied" to mine in one way or another. :-) My 3rd gr grandmothers were Timberlake sisters. When I saw this, I thought it couldn't be, but it is: They are daughters of Philip Timberlake, Jr. & Jean Peers. Sarah Timberlake married Abraham Estes in 1787. Catherine Timberlake, her sister, married Abraham Fletcher in 1794. The Fletchers brought in some North Carolina Bayliss blood, which added to the gene pool. :-) I hope to visit Louisa Co one day, and also Montgomery Co TN, where so many members of these families migrated in the 1820s - 1840s. Warmest Regards, Donna

Could someone with the new book do a quickie and se if you could find Charles and Mary Crews Harlow. They were born late 1700s ? Thanks Ray Harlow Elida Ohio
Thanks for your message, Linda. You are certainly right, it is clear on the tombstone. We went over the inscriptions so many times, trying to make sure they were right, but it just goes to show, no matter how careful you try to be, there's always the possibility of error. I'm glad, in this case, it is clear on the stone. I will correct it in case we do a third printing. We have the second printing now, and they are going quickly. Yes, there are quite extensive laws in VA about disturbing old graveyards. And I think the developers are trying to do better, at least it seems that way. I am not familiar with the property you mentioned, but if you can be more specific, we will check it out. Thanks for your support. I received my graveyard book today. I am happy to have it for several reasons. As you can tell from the picture on J-008, it is not being kept up. Also there is a slight error in the wording on the Beverly R and Thomas J Fox label. He was Beverly Ragland Fox and she was Thomasia Johnson Fox. You can see it on the tombstone correctly. She lived to be quite old. Thanks for your work. Do you know if there are laws in Virginia about destroying old cemeteries? I know some states do not allow it to happen. There was a gravesite on the property that my father, T J Henderson and my Aunt Linda Fox Downey referred to as Egypt. It was where the slaves were buried and I have no idea where that is in relation to the one in the book. I do not know the name Hawkins in colonial Virginia, but in colonial Granville Co., NC, there are good many family members by that name. Tanner - a smelly profession!!! I grew up near the Texas-Mexican border, and hides were imported from northern Mexico to my hometown. This was before air-conditioning was known to anyone except the owner of the movie theater and the family of a water and power executive in town. Whew!!! Then some years ago, my California-born husband and I were visiting a California mission which had a big tannery vat in front, where the Indians [slaves? or converts?] were put to work. My husband, an amateur historian, said that urine was used to tan the hides. Another tale--during the Korean War, my husband was fortunate enough to be sent to Germany, at a well-known air base. The PX had Morocco leather items for sale. I bought a coin purse. It was a lovely item, but it smelled so bad, we had to put it in the hall--or away from the bedrooms!!! I love shoes, horse lovers love saddles, and women love leather purses, but, oh my!!! The process which the leather has to undergo!!! I remember when ladies, before we bought shoes made in Brazil and in China and such places, loved shoes from Italy, always a generation ahead in fashion, it seems. One salesman told me, We send our American hides to Italy, and they, not we, make the shoes. I cannot tell you about saddlers and cordwainers of the early eras of America, but I think tanneries may not be much different today. This a brief item from Wikipedia - the dictionary part. It says there is an article about cordwainers. Maybe there is one about tanneries. cordwainer 1. a shoemaker 2. a worker in _cordwain_ (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cordwain) a _leather_ (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/leather) from _Córdoba_ (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Córdoba) . 3. a member of the _Cordwainers_ (http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Cordwainers&action=edit) _livery company_ (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/livery_company) E.W.Wallace ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
I have been looking at an old map of Orange County that is on the Library of Congress website. It is credited to a man named Lezard (I think that I have that spelling correct) and is dated 186? on the website. There is a marking at Mallory's Ford on the North Anna River on the border of that says Hawkins Tannery. I am looking for ideas on how to find out more about this Hawkins Tannery. Any ideas from anyone out there? I would also be excited to hear from anyone any information that anyone might have that would be related to the profession of Tanner. How about you who have Hawkins ancestors in KY....do you have Tanners among them? Marsha Moses
