    3. A Chancery Record is the transcription of a proceeding , usually between two person, but can be groups over some chattel object(land)(debt) to determine who has the right to Hold(own) it.[Just Claim} It usually is intent not LAW THAT IS THE DETERMINING FACTOR. 3. The chancery records indexed on this site are still at the Louisa Courthouse and can be viewed only there at this time. The early chancery records indexed on the Library of Virginia site are at the archives in Richmond and can be viewed only there at this time. I have been told there are plans to scan both sets of these records and put them online. When this will happen is anybodies guess. The earlier chancery records now at Richmond have been down there for over 30 years and just in the last 8 or 9 years been processed and indexed. The ones at the courthouse are a continuation of the ones in Richmond. The Library of Virginia index online now is indexed under style of the suit - a plaintiff and a defendant. The index just put online at this website is an almost every name in the suit. Often times the bill and the answer will give you just about all of the genealogical information if there is any but not always. Had to add not always as just about every statement can be amended!

    3. Sally: I know the Louisa courthouse has chancery books accessible that record chancery entries and dates. However, the last time I actually tried to access the actual record of a chancery book entry there, it was unavailable. It is my understanding that the records were sent to the Library of Virginia for microfilming and most of the chancery papers were tied up in a flap over payment for achive services. It has been a couple of years since I last tried. Maybe things have changed since then. The Library of Virginia catalogue is my first choice for resources. Second is finding someone in Louisa kind enough to check on availability at the courthouse before making a special trip. Hope this helps. 1. [VALOUISA] odd record
    2. Can anyone help me with an odd record? I found this in a book entitled, LOUISA COUNTY RECORDS YOU PROBABLY NEVER SAW of 18th Century Virginia, compiled by John C. Bell, Nashville, Tennessee, 1983. Book was at the LDS library in Salt Lake City. Under a section in the book entitled "Unrecorded Deeds of Louisa County 1762-1803": Martha Tate & others to Isaac Morris 18 Nov 1801 John Tate, Wm Mansfield, Wm Hollins, Thos. Gooch, Corns. Gooch (Martha Tate, Timri Tate, Thomas Tate, Enos Tate, Sam'l McGehe and wife Nancy, Archibald Riddle and wife Elizabeth and James Hatcher and wife Martha, all heirs of Timri Tate late of Georgia, to Isaac Morris 200 acres on Contrary Creek bought of Charles Cosby and adjoining Wm Grady, Wm. Mansfield, Robert Lanford, Stapleton Crutchfield. Signed by Timri Tate as Attorney-in-Fact for all heirs. Proven 12 Apr. 1802 John Tate and Mansfield.) [There is a 200 on the margin of the page. 200 acres??] Does this mean that Thomas Gooch was once married to a Tate?? His son was Cornelius Gooch. I think he would have been over 21 in 1801. Does this mean that his mother was a Tate?? Alice What does the compiler mean by the placement of the parentheses?? **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. 3. Sally, Check the Library of VA's web site. An index is there so you you can find out whether your ancestor had a Chancery record. The index indicates whether the record is filmed or not. The records I wanted to see were not filmed. After checking their site for what it would cost to have the library make the copies, I decided we would arrange to be in Richmond at some time. I live in CA so it isn't a short trip. Even then it was not inexpensive. After you prove you are trustworthy, prove you are you, put anything you brought into the room with you in a locker, the help will give you a form. Pencil only. You order the file you wish. No more than 3 files at a time. If you want a copy, the help makes the copy. These are original papers, many over 200 years old. Good luck. 3. To get to the library, from Louisa, head East on route 22/33. At the eastern edge of Louisa, the roads split (at a traffic light) and 22 goes towards Mineral, 33 towards Richmond. You want to take 22, about 4 miles east of Louisa, then look for the Library on the right. If you go past the High School, or reach the town of Mineral -- turn around.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray&Lela Harlow" <lharlow1@woh.rr.com> To: <valouisa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 03, 2007 3:27 PM Subject: Re: [VALOUISA] newspapers PS > Louisa County Historic Society > E-mail Address(es): > louisahistory@verizon.net > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Suzie Ball" <suzietimball@att.net> > To: <valouisa@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, December 03, 2007 3:13 PM > Subject: Re: [VALOUISA] newspapers > > >> Thank you. 3. Suzie, In my memory you go east out of Louisa on same street the courthouse is on. The library sets beside a large school. When you go up to Orange the Historic society is one your left on the edge of downtown. One of you native of the area please correct me if my memory is bad. It has been a couple years.
