    1. [VALOUISA-L] Cowherd Book
    2. I recently heard of a book called COWHERD GENEALOGY written by Edythe Cowherd Newton Cir. 1962. I have tried to locate the book on interlibrary loan with no success. I understand this book follows the GRAVES and COWHERD lines back to Capt. Thomas Graves. These are some of my ancestors and I would love to find a copy if it it available somewhere. If anyone has a clue please e-mail me. Thanks Oneida S. Stephens, [email protected]

    1. [VALOUISA-L] 1860 Census
    2. Thanks, Wayne, for the notification of the 1860 census. I spent some time there yesterday and was wondering why the census taker listed children as "inmates"? Anyone have an idea? Too bad Mr. Thomas (census taker) discontinued his listing of county of birth after the first few days. It's great information. Jan

This is a free service on: The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site [ http://www.buffalonet.org/army ] Every pre-Civil War state was well represented at this short lived federal military post. Many having served in the Florida Indian Wars, the War with Mexico, and then the Civil War. Perhaps you have an ancestor who was at the Buffalo Barracks? Cliff Williams [email protected]

    2. Bill Mozingo
    3. Dear Fellow Listmembers, After his mother's and father's deaths in 1923 and 24 in Buena Vista my father was placed in foster homes and attended Bell's Crossroads Elementary from 1925 beginning at age 7 and completed grade 9 probably at Louisa High School at age 14 or 15. His foster parents were Mr and Mrs A. R. Moss who lived in the Bell's Crossroads area and worked the local tobacco fields during this period. In June 1933 after Mr Moss died my father was devastated and began to hang around with a bad crowd at school and get into trouble resulting in school suspensions. After this he stayed with Mr Welford Gilman for a short period and then with Mr and Mrs Charles Robinson and on July 21, 1933 he was placed with the foster family of Mr and Mrs J. S. Morris. During this time he had a girlfriend named Wanda Irving. I do not know if these families resided in the same general area or not. In 1936 my father entered the Navy served in China, WWII, Korea and was exposed to two Atomic Tests before he retired in 1956. He was married 5 times and had 3 sons of which I am the eldest and passed away in 1976 at the young age of 59. I understand that what I am requesting is almost impossible to succeed but if you know of anyone anywhere who attended these schools during this time period and they are still with us, I would appreciate greatly if someone could ask that person if they could remember my father William Lovey Mozingo, it would mean alot to me while I realize this is alot to ask of someone to remember back that far. According to his orphanage records he liked school very much and made very good grades. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, baseball and also participating in school plays. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bill Mozingo

    1. Re: [VALOUISA-L] Bell's Crossroads
    2. Hi Bill, Sad to say, but I can't help with anything about the history of Bell's Crossroads. Yes, you are correct -- it is in Louisa County. If you follow route 208 about six miles south west of the town of Louisa, at the intersection of route 638, you will find it. On the "new" maps of the county, route 208 is Court House road, and 638 is E. Jack Jouette Road. About a mile north of that intersection, is another intersection named Butlers Store, where Old Mountain road (rt 640) leads to the east. Also, if you follow route 638 west of the intersection of 208, in a few hundred yards you will find Byrd Mill road (rt 649) leading off to the north (Byrd Mill, on the South Anna river is about 3 miles away). Good Luck, Wayne Dunn [email protected]

    3. Would appreciate information from anyone that would have knowledge of a place called Bell's CrossRoads supposidly located in Louisa County, VA. This is where my father grew up as a child with a foster family by the name of MOSS. I am interested particularly in the name of the schools that were in the area during the 1930's and possibly locating microfiche records for these schools. Thank you very much. Bill
