My ancestor, Moses Clack [Sr.], was in Louisa Co. during the first part of the 18th century before the part he was in was made Albemarle Co. If all goes well, I'll be in Louisa for a day during the first week of August. Where is the library and when is it open? R. 3. On page 110 of "Old Homeplaces of Louisa County Virginia", is shown an old brick home and described as perhaps on the site of an earlier home of Francis Clark Sr. (My gggggfather) It was said to be located on Old Mountain Road (Route 460) near the waters of Fork Creek. I was unable to locate any sign of the old house during a recent driveby on Route 460. Does anyone know if it still exists. Thank you, Wayne Clark yne Clark

    3. I have two questions concerning the present day population of Native Americans in Louisa Co. The 1990 census statistices show 65 residents of Louisa Co. who claimed American Indian as their national origin. The census maps show them concentrated in the south central part of the county; south the town of Louisa and centered generally around Yanceyville. This is census tract 9504. There is also a small concentraton west south west of Louisa. 1. Does anyone know if these people are the descendants of Indians who inhabited the area before 1800, or are they later arrivals. If so, from where? 2. Does anyone know the tribal ties they claimed. The 1990 census asked, but that statistical data is not yet available. 1. [VALOUISA-L] HANCOCK Family Interconnections
    2. Audrey Shields Hancock
    3. I am posting this information in case there are any surnames here that are "bell ringers" for family relationships and interconnections to any other HANCOCK family or other families. Nancy/Ann DICKENSON/DICKERSON, dau/o Nathaniel DICKENSON & #1 Lucy ???, b ca 1760 probably Louisa Co., VA; married Joseph HANCOCK; was an heir in her step-brother's (Tarlton B. LUCK's) estate in 1797; & died after 1850 probably Hanover Co., VA. Joseph HANCOCK was b 1759 probably Hanover Co., VA & d 1833 Hanover Co., VA. Siblings of Nancy (DICKENSON) HANCOCK included: John DICKENSON, Noten DICKENSON, Nathaniel DICKENSON, Martha "Patsy" DICKENSON (m George WILKERSON), Garland DICKENSON (m Louisa Co., VA to Elizabeth SNELSON), & DABNEY DICKENSON. After the death of Lucy (???) DICKENSON, Nathaniel DICKENSON m ca 1775 the widow, Elizabeth (?BROWN) LUCK (maiden name probably Elizabeth BROWN, dau/o Tarlton BROWN of Louisa Co., VA). Elizabeth (?BROWN) LUCK had children: Austin LUCK , Sarah LUCK (m Henry SMITH), Tarleton B. LUCK (m Crosha "Cassandra" Cassety KENNEDY), Larkin LUCK , Mary LUCK (m Charles FORREN/FASON/FORTSON), & Elizabeth LUCK (m Bartlett/Bartelot SNELSON). Joseph HANCOCK & Nancy DICKENSON had at least one son Joseph HANCOCK Jr. who was born in 1791 and died sometime after 1850 when he appears in the Hanover Co., VA census with his mother. Others listed as living with them in the census include Amelia HANCOCK (40), Sarah A. HANCOCK (believed to be Sarah A. P. (WALLER) HANCOCK, wf/o Joseph HANCOCK, Jr.)(37), Harriet B. HANCOCK (13), Joseph W. HANCOCK (11), Elizabeth HANCOCK (9), John W. HANCOCK (5) and Susan F. HANCOCK (2). However, I do not have the data as to relationship of these other HANCOCKs mentioned in 1850 Census to Nancy (DICKENSON) HANCOCK or her son, Joseph HANCOCK, Jr. Is Amelia HANCOCK a sister of Joseph, Jr., as I believe Sarah is his wife, and the children are probably children of Joseph Jr. & Sarah? I believe children of Joseph HANCOCK & Nancy DICKENSON included: John HANCOCK (m Louisa Co., VA to Susan Pettus GRAVES), Tarleton HANCOCK, Benjamin HANCOCK, William HANCOCK, & Larkin HANCOCK (m Louisa Co., VA to Sarah PETTUS) besides the Joseph HANCOCK, Jr. (m Louisa Co., VA to Sarah A. P. WALLER) mentioned above. I further believe Joseph HANCOCK (hus/o Sarah) is brother of (Capt.) John HANCOCK b 1753 possibly Hanover Co., VA; m 1774 to Nancy Ann GRAVES, dau/o Thomas GRAVES & Isabella BARTLETT. (Capt.) John and Nancy lived in Louisa Co., VA before removing to KY and finally to Butler Co., OH. I believe that both appear to be sons of Benjamin HANCOCK (b York Co., VA & m Mary BEADLES) who it appears owned land in Hanover Co., VA and Louisa Co., VA. Susan Pettus (GRAVES) HANCOCK mentioned above was niece of Nancy Ann (GRAVES) HANCOCK. Thus it appears John & (Capt.) John, their husbands, were also uncle & nephew. Looking for verifications, documentation, & other family connections that may bring our HANCOCK families together with other families. 3. About the willed property in Louisa Co. by someone who didn't live in Louisa Co. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was much mining in around Mineral in Louisa Co. Many of the engineers, etc. came from Pennsylvania. It could be that Catherine McCarthy got her land from one of these miners. Since it was real estate she willed, her will will most likely be on file at the courthouse. Tax records would show who paid taxes on it, if she got the land by deed, who the heirs deeded the land to and how long they kept it. I do know that there were some Fisher families associated with the mines but don't remember their given names. Maybe some more surnames associated with Catherine would be helpful. Was McCarthy her married name, if so what was her maiden name? Janice

    1. Message from Anne Marie .... RE: [VALOUISA-L] Farm In Louisa Co.
    2. Webster Houlgrave
    3. Hello Anne Marie, I live in Louisa Co., VA and would be happy to help you look into this, at least to help you develop some better leads. Though your GGM apparently never lived in VA, she may have inherited the property herself from another individual with a VA connection, perhaps on her husbands side. I quickly checked some deed, probate and geneological info. about Louisa Co. on www. trevillians.com but found no mention of a McCarthy or Fisher in those records (which may not be complete). We'll need some more info. I think. How old would your aunt and uncles have been when your ggm died? I believe that minors can legally receive title to real property but are prevented from conveying title to real property. Therefore, if they were minors, it's possible the farm in question was held in trust for them until they reached their majority (18 YOA). It is further possible that the if it was decided that none of them would ever occupy the farm or there was some pressing need to convert it to cash, that it was sold by the trust and the proceeds either held in trust or remanded to the beneficiaries. In short, it might be possible that the records available for online viewing contain reference to your farm but in someone else's name (the trustee or trust). Another possibility is that your GGM never held a valid and conveighable title to the property in question and therefore could not legally leave it anyone. Still another possibility is that your GGM's debts at her death exceeded the value of her oth! er assets and the farm was sold by her estate to settle those debts (however, this gets back to the question of the completeness of the online records since the property should still show up in her name). Of course there are probably other explanations, but if she actually owned a farm in Louisa Co., we should be able to document it through court/public records. I'll keep lookin' and you let me know if you think of any more info. that might be helpful. And maybe some else on this list will toss in their "two cents worth". Goodluck! Hello, I am new to this list because it was just today that I found my connection to Louisa County. My g-g grandmother, Catherine McCarthy died in November 1917 in Luzerne Co., PA. Today, I got a copy of her will. In the will says "I give, devise, and bequeath to my grandchildren, Joseph, Maria, and James Fisher my farm consisting of 150 acres of land situated in Louise County, Virginia, share and share alike, to them, their heirs and assigns, forever." I know this is very little information to go on, but I was wondering if anyone can give me any ideas as to how I might find out more information about this property, i.e. how she got it, who was living on it, what happened to it after the grandchildren inherited it. To my knowledge, my g-g grandmother came from Ireland in 1858 and arrived in either MA or CT. She settled in New Haven, CT for several years before coming to PA in 1868. I do not believe she ever left Luzerne Co. unless she went to visit someone in VA. I am 99% sure she never lived there. Yet, this is a complete surprise knowing she had land in VA. I knew my Uncle Jim and Aunt Marie (two of the grandchildren) and they never talked about a farm in VA. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Anne Marie
