    2. Yes, I too would like a copy of the History of Louisa County. I have seen a copy in the Ellen Payne Odum Genealogical Library in Moultrie, Georgia. Will the information about ordering be posted on the Valouisa Digest? Hubert Vernon Synan

    1. [VALOUISA-L] Does Higginson copyright this book for themselves if they print it.
    2. Dee Randall
    3. I'm not sure how this works, but if a printing company prints this book, then don't they have a copyright for the next ? years. I think since the book is only 500+ pages long, why couldn't it be copied and put on line at Louisa County site. We would not have to have permission to do this, since the copyright has run out. I would be willing to copy at least 100 pages myself -- if someone would send me the book to copy -- and I'll be there would be five others -- or ten that would copy 50 - 100 pages and then it would be there free for all to look up. Am I being too naive? Dee Randall

    3. Goodness! What a response on the Malcolm Harris book! FYI, The Table of Contents has I. Political History II. Military History III. Highways and Homes IV. Churches and Parishes and Ministers V. Educational and VI. Appendix which has marriages, genealogical notes on selected families, bibliography and an index of names mentioned throughout the book. For Kathryn, there is almost a page of Overtons in the index. There are entries from the early 1700s through the mid to late 1800s, and a few later dates on some individuals. Many names are only on a military roster, a marriage bond, list of tithes, etc. I'm in the process of answering nearly 20 requests so far -- be patient if yours is one of them. Ethel Smith

    3. Hi! At first I thought all the history book excitement was about the book "Louisa and Louisa County" by Pattie Gordon Cooke, until I read the author's name was Malcom Harris. So, there are two books out there on the "olde days" of Louisa County. The 128 page book by Pattie Cooke, subtitled "Images of America" is chock full of neat old photos. It's a well done work and I do have my name on the list for the Harris copy also. Mrs. Cooke is a current member of the Louisa County Historical Society. The address there of the Hist. Soc. is Box 1172, Louisa, Va. 23093. I bought a copy for myself and one for my brother on a family history research trip there last month. Ken Thompson.

    2. What looks like the "new pages" are numbered such as 255A, 255B, 255C inserted between pages 255 and 256 - which would make them additional pages. The book also has 7 pages before page numbered 1 (including introduction and table of contents) and then runs through page numbered 525.

    3. I am very surprised at the number of people that want copies of this book. I think we are approaching 50 so far. What I am almost sure we will need a copy of the book, although I haven't confirmed it yet with HIGGINSON. I hope someone with the 1963 release will consider a loan just in case we need it. When I hear from the book company, I'll let everyone know. I don't plan on handling the orders personally, that you will do individually through HIGGINSON. I just am trying to put the deal together and needed to know if there was a real interest in the project to move ahead. This is exciting. I hope to tell you more tomorrow. Keep emailing me with your interest, the more the better to get this thing done! Thanks Adrianne

    3. To the interested list members, Author: Harris, Malcolm Hart Title: History of Louisa County, Virginia Publisher: Dietz Press Year: 1963 525 pages ______________________________ I called Dietz Press this morning. They said this was a private printing and was not distributed by them. [Dr.] Harris' last known address was in 1953, P.O. Box West Point VA. I checked some death records online and found that he died: SSN/FEIN: 229-60-1586 Last Name: HARRIS First Name: MALCOLM Date of Death: 04-00-1984 Date of Birth: 12-25-1896 Zip Code: 23181 Age at Death: 87 Last Residence: WEST POINT VA State Where SSN Issued: VIRGINIA I then called the Copyright office and was given the web site: www.loc.gov/copyright this site has searchable indexes for copyrights renewed from the year of 1978 forward. Since he published this book in 1963 and the operator told me that his copyright would have been good until 1991 I checked the to see if it was renewed. It wasn't. It appears the family must not have chosen to renew copyright of his book. If someone has access to a newspaper and can locate an obit for Dr. Harris, we can contact a next of kin, if there is one, to see if books are available. If that doesn't work then we can ask the Louisa County Historical Society to do a reprint. Lastly we can form a group and reprint the book ourselves for cost. I know the HIGGINSON book company does reprints for nominal fee. It depends on the paper choice and the cover, etc. Can we have a little discussion on this, I for one would like to have a copy of the book. Regards, Adrianne Hopkins Atlanta, GA
