    1. Re: [VALOUISA-L] Corrections of the Book by Dr. Harris
    2. Mary E. Stewart
    3. Adrianne - Accepting "corrections" to Dr. Harris' book would likely be a very perilous project. What standard of evidence will there be to insure as nearly as possible that the corrections are accurate? Who will arbitrate if two or more people submit differing corrections to the same passage? Is a misspelled name an error in need of correction or is that the way the name appears in the original records? I think it is best to leave Dr. Harris' book as he wrote it. If there is a need for another volume of corrections, publish it separately. -- Mary E. Stewart [email protected]

    1. [VALOUISA-L] Correcting Dr. Harris' book
    2. Hi all, I agree it probably would be difficult to submit corrections to Dr. Harris' book but as I myself have spend a lot of hours trying to find the truth about what he published (and then discovered he mixed up generations in my Waddy family and missed people all together), I'd like to spare some people those problems. One of my distant Waddy cousins contacted Dr. Harris herself with questions about the Waddy line and he simply sent back what he had already published in the book, even though she disagreed with some of his conclusions. His "non-answer" (and this is not a criticism, I'm thankful for the clues he did give me about my Waddy line), caused her to waste a number of years going in circles, because what he wrote did not make sense with all the other information she had. Perhaps we could include a page just noting there are problems with the following family lines and then list the ones whose accuracy we question. Since Dr. Harris did not provide documentation, perhaps we could suggest readers check out Wayne Dunn's Louisa County page and we could post what we believe to be the true lineage. I'm happy to share what I have about the Waddy line (and I point out in the paper I wrote about the Waddys where both Dr. Harris as well as the Kentucky Genealogical Society have made understandable errors about the Waddy family) with anyone looking for them in Louisa County. Thanks for the interesting comments, Michelle Ule [email protected] Ukiah, CA

    1. [VALOUISA-L] Corrections of the Book by Dr. Harris
    2. Adrianne
    3. This question came up before on another project that I was dealing with Laura about. Here is her answer: "We do not generally make the corrections to the original book ourselves. If there are minimal corrections that can be made by the inclusion of a "corrections & additions" page or chapter, you might want to consider that as the easiest option. If it would be easier for readers to follow, you can insert separate corrections pages at the end of each chapter or section. Or if the book was originally compiled on a computer, you can simply go back to the file and make the necessary changes, and then print a new master copy. " Laura HIGGINSON Books ______________________________________ We can make the corrections but the problem I see is, not everyone will know about the mistakes in their line if they have never seen the book. Remember increasing the pages will increase the price. We have about 70 people wanting copies right now and growing. If we can get 100, the price will drop even more. The price doesn't include shipping. I won't know the shipping until Laura returns from Christmas Vacation. If we scan the book in sections and send it out to those who will proof and make corrections we can have a digital copy. If we don't want to get into that kind of work, we will have to add some pages as she suggested. _______________________________________ VOTE NEEDED....SEND YOUR REPLY TO ME PERSONALLY AND NOT THE LIST. I WILL POST THE RESULTS! 1.) Leave book as is. 2.) Make corrections to data in the book with no additions. 3.) Scan the book for a digital copy and add current families. [If you vote for this option you're name will be added to do some of the work] If someone has suggestions, please make them. I am not the boss here, just the one organizing the list to get the book printed. If someone has a better solution, I am open to hear it. Regards, Adrianne Hopkins List member

    2. To anyone considering lending their Harris book for reprint: Your book will probably be in better condition after it is taken apart and rebound that it is now. It's an easy process and book binders do wonderful jobs. I wouldn't worry about having a book of mine taken apart. I'm only sorry that I don't have a copy of the Harris book to lend. Jan

    3. I use to do research for a person who wrote military history. You might consider the format I used to put several hundred de-classifed research pages I got from President (LBJ) Johnson's library in Austin Texas. The site has about 280 - 300 pages and uses every bit of 25meg of internet space. Page quality was reduced so that each page was about 80,000 to 135,000 bytes per page. http://members.easyspace.com/airdrop/index.html I have copied some of the pages of the Louisa book under discussion here. I would expect you should probably expect 80,000 to 100,000 bytes per each page you scan. I hope you find this helpful in figuring how much internet space you need to plan for. Of course the smaller you make the image file the faster it loads. You can save allot of space by converting the image file to a TEXT file if you have a program which will do this cleanly. Often this doesn't work well because of the type set the book was pinted in. My 5th G Grandparents Daivid and Judith ____? Anderson are in the book. Unfortunally the information for them is not correct. 3. I have had some interest in knowing about how they print the book. Here is her reply, I have already told her that the BOOK HAS TO BE RETURNED TO THE OWNER. I already told her I didn't want to be responsible for the money. Everyone would have to deal with her directly. I was just collecting names to judge the price breaks. The more we print, the cheaper it gets. I'm trying to keep everyone informed as the questions come in. I'm sorry if your mailbox is getting full of these messages. Adrianne +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 12/2/1999 Thanks very much for your message. I would be happy to reprint this book; all I would need is a copy of the book from which to make a printing master. I would need to be able to disbind the book, but could rebind it and return it to the owner if necessary (we prefer to keep the original and replace it with two copies of our hardcover reprint, but that's not necessary). The book would list for around $50 for a single copy, but would be as low as $32.50 for an order of fifty copies. If you would like to proceed, please let me know. (I'll be gone from tomorrow through the end of the month, between a vacation and holidays). Again, many thanks, Laura Bjorklund, Acquisitions Director HIGGINSON BOOK COMPANY +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 12/2/1999 Hi - just caught me before leaving! You can send the book to my attention any time - it will just wait for me, like all my other mail. Are you planning on placing a group order, or having people order individually? I'll send pricing for both when I get back from vacation, and you can order any time after that. We would need either a check or money order, or a MC/Visa number that would not be charged until the books are shipped. Again, many thanks, Laura HIGGINSON BOOKS

    2. Adrianne
    3. I have a go with the book company. Laura, at HIGGINSON, tells me if we get 50 people the price with be $32.50. By the current list we meet that number. Laura is going on vacation until the end of December. I am going to see who else could get this in the works for us!!! Check to see if your name is on the list, if not send it to me. The more we print the cheaper it gets. I think the price above is with a hardcover. I did check a few more places but they wanted me to be a 'clearinghouse' for the books and that would have evolved me handling money and shipping, etc.. I didn't want to get into that. I didn't want to handle people's money, etc. This way we all will send our money to HIGGINSON Books directly. I'll have the details of when the book will go to them to be printed when she returns my message. I'll report back then. Adrianne List member Wayne Dunn Listowner [email protected] 1.. 1. [VALOUISA-L] Louisa Book by Harris
    2. Adrianne, Please add my name to the list for the book The History of Louisa County, Va. by Malcolm H. Harris. For those who live in or near the Spotsylvania Court House. They have a copy of this book at the Spotyslvania Museum. I copied some of the pages when I was there. Believe this---- copies were 10 cents. I think it is an excellent book. I found some of my ancestors listed in this book. Thanks Oneida S. Stephens.
