    3. Diane, Do you have access to the 1870 Loudoun County census or would you like me to check next time I go to Balch? I see in my 1870 index, of the Tates, listed, there is one Jeremiah, age 63, (BINGO!) in "southern District, LoCo {so south of route 7], series M593, roll1659, page 198.. Maybe you have already seen this but if not, it's a good place to start, because if they were slaves right up to emancipation, this would be the first census they would appear in. The other African-American Tates are Jim, Charles, Emily, Emma, Fenton, James, Lucy, Walker and William. The index lists ages if you can use them.
