Before the disestablishment of the Episcopal church in Virginia everyone had to support the Episcopal church; other faiths like the Baptists particularly were persecuted. I think non-episcopal preachers may not have been granted the equivalent of licenses to perform marriages, for example. The Baptists were also very active in the campaign separating church from state. The Baptists also organized some migrations out of Virginia into Kentucky very early (around 1780). This seems to be the hidden history in some of my families. (Using VA and KY in their modern sense, of course)
