Does anyone know of a website out there that you can plug a Surname into and it will come back with other spellings for the Surname? Ms Scott, I see where you are researching McCarty, which, I believe, is basically Irish but one of the spellings found in Faquier and Loudoun Counties for McArtor. Our McArtors lived around Hillsboro and my branch was from Upperville--just up the road from you. I will be watching for an answer to your question about some variant spelling forms for names. For example, my "Scipio" surname is also spelled Cippio in records - which soundex doesn't catch.
