Genealogical Society FRECOGS proudly presents for the Community and the Maryland & Virginia Genealogical Societies Joint Conference ”From Maryland to Virginia and Back Again” A Banquet Program featuring Joel Achenbach, writer for the Washington Post & National Geographic Society and author of “George Washington’s Potomac and the Race to the West - The Grand Idea Following the theme of the joint genealogical conference - migration between of Maryland and Virginia - we are presenting an evening centered around their border - our Potomac River. Frederick County, Maryland’s colonial ‘front door,’ the Patowmach River, is the main feature on all 18th Century MId-Atlantic maps - guiding the way West for explorers, traders, and early settlers. Mr. Achenbach will relate early sagas surrounding this historic river, through George Washington’s eyes. Returning after years as commander of the Continental Army, General Washington journeyed and worked to find the best route to the new West beyond the mountains. He culminated in a breathtaking scheme, a Grand Idea, to transform the Potomac River into a commercial artery and, as Washington believed, would bind our new country. Early explorers and frontiersmen were aided by the improvements of Washington ’s 18th century Potomac Company, later evolving into the our own C&O Canal. Commerce, families, and documentation have followed the Potomac up and down for more than 300 years. Come learn just how many spellings ‘Potomac’ can be. It is of little wonder that historians and genealogists will be keenly interested in learning more clues for their own historical research and interest from this well annotated history book. In addition - this evening will provide: displays from local historical organizations, book sales, sharing tables, music, demonstrations, sales, and Mr. Achenbach’s book signing. Two special living history presentations will be on hand during the Wine & Cheese Social Hour. · Raleigh Boaze from Rosemont, MD will represent the life of an 18th Century backcountry woodsman. · Doris E. Day from Washington Grove, MD will educate us about the colonial spinning of wool and flax. Introduction by Dr. George E. Lewis of the Point of Rocks Community Historical Society.
