Teresia, There is a significant chance that there is no will, if the only thing listed in the index was the appraisement. This would mean the estate would pass by intestate succession under the Virginia statutes. You would then want to search for an estate accounting, which would set forth the receipts and disbursements for the estate and may list the heirs and the shares each received as part of the administration of the estate. If there is no estate accounting, there is often a petition and order for the sale of land and division of the proceeds among the heirs which again would list the names of the heirs and their respective shares. Generally, the shares are of equal amounts, but if a child has predeceased the parent, then the grandchildren would divide the deceased child's share, resulting in smaller amounts for them. If the land were not sold, you will often find one or more deeds by which one heir purchased the interests of other heirs in the land. Alternatively, if you examine the Land Tax Lists for the county for the years before and after death, there is often a listing of the decedent as owner of the land until death and then a listing of the heirs as new taxpayers after death. This is another route for finding the names of the surviving spouse and children. Hope this is of help to you in your search. Best wishes, Bob Grant Teresia & Jamil Scott wrote: > Bob, > Thank you.
