There is a website that offers free DNA tests. Postage paid. You can go to the site and check it out. www.smgf.org
It is true, smgf.org does offer free DNA tests, however, they only test a limited number of markers, 17, I think, and you could wait a very long time before you see your results on the website. It usually takes 8-12 weeks to recieve test results, I know of some people who have waited 18 months to 2 years to see their results on the smgf website. SMGF has its own research objective, and that might not correspond with what you want to know by being tested. 17 markers is not a sufficient number to prove relationships. I manage 6 DNA projects, at a company which will remain nameless. They offer 12, 25, 37 and 67 markers. In my projects, most of the mutations, which either prove or disprove relationships, have come between markers 26 and 37. You can match on 12, 17, and 25 markers, and still not be related, especially if you are in a haplogroup that covers a wide swath of the population. Even if you match on the markers, you cannot be related, if you are in different haplogroups. If I used words with which you are not familiar, check them in wikipedia. wikipedia will give you a much better explanation than I can. Please do not construe my comments to be negative about SMGF. They are doing what they set out to do very well, it just might not be what you are looking for. Also be aware that all testing companies are not equal, each tests a different number of markers, the information they provide to help you understand your test results is different and the way they report test results is different. The old rule of you get what you pay for certainly needs to be condidered with DNA testing. Marleen Van Horne
