    3. I am not sure if I saw this announcement posted about a great opportunity for our family and local historians. I think this is a good opportunity to come to Frederick and learn more German resources and techniques. Give the Historical Society a call to learn more, or find out if there is still room. Good time to meet other German researchers, and those interested in local history. My apologies for the multiple list postings, but I think this is too good to not spread the word. When you register - let them know you if you first saw this on Rootsweb! Pepper Scotto GENEALOGY SYMPOSIUM 2008 Sponsored by: Historical Society of Frederick Co., MD GERMAN GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH with JOHN T. HUMPHREY, President of Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society When: Saturday, March 29, 2008 . 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Where: The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center -40 South Carroll Street . Frederick, Maryland Cost: $40 for HSFC and as a courtesy to FRECOGS members. $50 for non-members Pre-register is a must - space is limited, and lunch and handouts are included only for pre-registrations - see bottom for link to registration form. Agenda: 9:00 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast 9:30-10:30 Session #1: RESEARCHING EIGHTEENTH CENTURY GERMANS Germans were the largest non-English speaking group to immigrate into 18th century America and they settled in the mid-Atlantic region. Differences exist in records that were kept for these families for three important reasons: they were immigrants, they had different record-keeping traditions, and they spoke a different language. These differences will be examined in this session. 10:45-11:45 Session #2: RESEARCHING GERMAN ANCESTORS: "THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY" More Americans claim descent from German ancestors than from any group that immigrated from the British Isles. This introduction to German research explores obstacles like language and customs, and it looks at a variety of records kept by Germans, both in the U.S. and Germany, that will open the way to a rich source of research material. 12:00-1:00 Lunch (Sandwiches and beverages are provided and included with pre-registration) * Select local history and genealogical titles from the HSFC Bookstore will be on sale (cash, check, and Visa/MC accepted). 1:15-2:15 Session #3: THE MORAVIANS: EIGHTEENTH CENTURY CLERICS AND CLERKS The Moravians were a small part of the much larger German immigration into the mid-Atlantic region, but their legacy is far greater than their numbers would suggest because of the records that they left. Much of what we know about life among mid-18th century Germans, especially as it relates to immigration and the early church in the region, comes to us from their records. 2:15-3:00 Informal discussions and information sharing JOHN T. HUMPHREY is president of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society and a past vice president of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. He is an award-winning author whose principal publication is the 16-volume set Pennsylvania Births listing over 200,000 births prior to 1825. His specialties include Pennsylvania colonial families and German immigrants. Mr. Humphrey is a native of Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
