Two James MERCHANTs appear in Loudoun Co in the early 1800's. James MERCHANT, reputed father. Case dismissed 12 Feb 1821 Mary SLACK - male b. 11 Jul 1823 at the house of Jane SLACK, James MERCHANT, adjudged father to pay $14.28 per yr for 7 yrs from date of birth for support of the child >From the Loudoun Co Personal Property Tax Lists: 1814A Cameron Parish Marchant, Phillip (levy free) and Marchant, James Some people believe that the father of the James Merchant listed below was Philip Merchant. But the following James Merchant lived in the First District, was married and had several children before the 1820's. It appears there are two difference James Merchants in Loudoun during the 1820's. The other James Merchant is as follows: JAMES MERCHANT was born 10 Sep 1788 in Virginia, and died 29 Jun 1859 in Morrisonville, Loudoun Co. He married MARY MORRISON, d/o ARCHIBALD MORRISON and JANE DYER, b. 4 Sep 1787 and d. 27 Jun 1855 in Loudoun. Children of JAMES MERCHANT and MARY MORRISON are: i. JANE E. MERCHANT, b. 15 Aug 1810, Morrisonville, Loudoun Co.; d. 18 May 1880, Jefferson Township, Loudoun Co., Virginia; m. WILLIAM KEYES, 16 Oct 1828, Lovettsville, Loudoun Co., Virginia. ii. DEBORAH "DEBBIE" M. MERCHANT was born Abt. 1811 in Loudoun Co., and died Bef. 1859 in Loudoun Co. She married FRANCIS R. SIMPSON 24 Jan 1829 in Loudoun Co., Virginia, s/o GEORGE SIMPSON. He was born Abt. 1809 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1880 in Muskingham Co., Ohio. iii. LANDON O. MERCHANT, b. Abt. 1815, Loudoun Co.; d. Bef. 27 Feb 1885, Loudoun Co., Virginia. iv. LEROY MERCHANT, b. 24 Sep 1816, Loudoun Co.; d. 25 Aug 1827, Loudoun Co. v. MARY C. MERCHANT was born Abt. 1821 in Loudoun Co., and died 1914 in Loudoun Co.. She married JOHN BONTZ 18 Oct 1840 in Loudoun Co.. He was born Abt. 1809 in Virginia, and died 1877. vi. EUPHEMIA MERCHANT was born Oct 1821 in Loudoun Co., and died 08 Feb 1901 in Loudoun Co. She married GEORGE SHUMAKER, son of SIMON SHUMAKER and CATHERINE EMERY. He was born 11 Oct 1821 in Loudoun Co., and died 27 Dec 1911 in Loudoun Co. vii. JAMES TURNER MERCHANT was born 13 Apr 1824 in Loudoun Co., and died 03 Jan 1908 in Rockville, Bates Co, Missouri. He married (1) MARY ANN BAKER 27 Aug 1844 in Loudoun Co., Virginia, d/o PHILIP BAKER and CATHERINE MANN. She was born 08 Nov 1821 in Loudoun Co., and died 19 Dec 1864 in Richmond, Virginia. He married (2) MARTHA ELIZABETH METZ 12 Oct 1873, d/o EZRA METZ and JANE GIBSON. She was born 02 May 1845 in Tedford, Lincoln Co., Ohio, and died 06 Jul 1899 in Rockville, Bates Co, Missouri. viii. ARCHIBALD W. MERCHANT, b. 26 Jun 1826, Loudoun Co.; d. 06 Feb 1901, Loudoun Co. ix. AGNES REBECCA MERCHANT was born 1829 in Loudoun Co., and died Bef. 1906. She married SAMUEL SHUMAKER 26 May 1851 in Loudoun Co., s/o SIMON SHUMAKER and CATHERINE EMERY. He was born 16 Oct 1827 in Loudoun Co., and died 28 Feb 1906 in Owings Mill, Baltimore Co., Maryland.
