One of the reasons ages may be incorrect on the census -- >From the Brunswick Herald, June 15, 1900: "The difficulty in securing the ages of women under the census enumeration, says the Boston Herald, has come up in the present census. This was to be expected; it always does. If there is anything that woman holds it to be impertinent for the public to inquire into it is the number of years she has been in this world. The trouble on this point is reported to have begun already in the South. A Richmond paper states the Chief Snead, of the Richmond Division, has been applied to be suffering and staggered enumerators to know what to do when women regard his inquiries anent their age as insulting and refuse to reply to them. 'Use diplomacy,' advises this resourceful and wily official. 'If a woman apparently 35 refuses to give her age, just tell her you are going to put her down as 45 on your list. I'll guarantee that will fix 'em all right.'" Pat Duncan p.duncan@worldnet.att.net
