June or Pat, or anyone else, Do you have any references to a Stohr family in Loudoun around 1750s-1770s? LDS site shows that Benjamin Johnson married Anna Maria Stohr and had Hannah, who married Joseph Puller. I appreciate any info that comes to light. Tosca
To all fellow researchers, I thought I'd share what I've learned about how to interpret and plot ancestor's land from the descriptions in land grants, and if I am incorrect in my methods, please correct me. After getting a scanned copy of my ancestor Valentine Holyfield's original land grant from March 1729 of the Virginia's Northern Necks, I became interested if it was possible to plot the boundaries of his 342 acres to scale and perhaps find where the original land boundaries are today, since discovering it's location 5.5 miles south of Leesburg,VA. After studying a copy of a book on early 18th century surveying & plotting, I came up with my best guesstimate of how to interpret the compass angle if you will of a given line or boundary of a property discription and it's length. So what I found if I am correct, and I tested my findings on a record of a land survey of a John Mercer who has drawn to scale his property in Southern Virginia from 1741, and my drawing matched perfectly with his recoreded drawing. So, first I discovered that when a given line or boundary of a property discription says basically from point (A) start at a scrubby oak and thence North 37 degrees,West; 112 poles to (B)......; you interpret first the compass heading or angle of the line from point (A) to point (B) by calculating North (as 360 degrees since you are then to plot an angle or heading towards the west direction on the compass), then 37 degrees-West means you take 360 degrees and subtract 37 degrees since you are heading towards West which is a heading less than the numerical number for North,360 degrees, and when you subtract 37degrees from 360 degrees, you come up with 323 degrees as the actual compass heading or angle for the property boundary that runs from point (A) to point (B). Now you need to know how far point (B) is from point (A) in order to plot it accurately. The term "poles" in the 18th century was 16.5 feet in length. You can research how a pole distance was determined and set as a standard youself. So to calculate the distance of the property line from point (A) to point (B), you simply multiply the number of poles by 16.5 feet; so in the above example you have stated a distance of 112 poles. 112 poles mul- tiplied by 16.5 feet equalls 1,848 feet. So you draw the first property boundary line from point (A) to point (B) at an angle of 323 degrees and a distance to scale of 1,848 feet and simply repeat these calculations for the remaining sides of the property discription till you get back to the beginning which is point (A) and you will have a drawing to scale of your ancestor's land from the 18th century. What is ironic for me is when I first plotted John Mercer's land based on his discription and it matched his drawing to scale in his notes, I then plotted my ancestor's property from 1729 and it did not work out. Seems that when my ancestor's 1729 property was recorded, it was recorded wrong. The last side of my ancestor's property heads south instead of north and is way too short to arrive back at the beginning of point (A). So any comments would be welcomed and.......by the way, the last time I requested infor- mation, someone was nice enough to send it to me, but I had trouble with my computer and didn't get to thank who ever it was......too long ago now. So I appreciate who ever sent me info when I requested it! Blessings, James A. Holifield
This is part of what I sent directly to Patti concerning Evergreen Mills. Note that the James W. Johnston mentioned below is one of the persons she is seeking information about. Minnie Francis Johnston was b. 8 July 1872 and d. 12 Feb 1941. The following is from Volume 2 of the series "Loudoun Discovered" by Eugene Scheel: .... for on December 2, 1855, when Henry and Elizabeth Ball sold the 102-acre "Ball's Mill" property, its cost to Thomas L. Ellzey was $8,000. Thomas Ellzey persevered as miller until after the war, selling out to James and Martha Mageath, who on January 18, 1875, sold the 14-acre Ball's Mill property to James W. Johnston for $6,000. Determined to get things going again, Mr. Johnston persuaded President Ulysses S. Grant to approve a post office at the mill and to appoint Mr. Johnston as first postmaster. Not content with the name of Ball's Mill, but not so brash as to use his own name, he took the suggestion of neighbor Billy Mitchell, who thought the varied green foliage in the spring so pretty: Why not "Evergreen"? On July 12, 1875, the Evergreen Mills Post Office opened, housed in a combination frame store and dwelling that Mr. Johnston had built across the road from the mill. As the Old Carolina Road had seen its through-traffic taken over by the Aldie Pike (Route 15) to the west, few felt the need for a bridge at the mill. However, upon Mr. Johnston's prodding, on July 25, 1892, the board of supervisors "Resolved that the sum of $6,500 be appropriated to build a Bridge over Goose Creek at Evergreen Mill." The iron-truss bridge was taken down in 1973. .... James Johnston stayed on as miller until 1895 and as postmaster and storekeeper until his death in 1897. After three successors in two years, John Orr Daniel took over the three jobs in 1899, buying the 14-acre mill property on November 15. For the first time in a deed, the property was called "Evergreen Mill." Old names die hard in Virginia. The road was known as Ball's Mill Road through the first decade of the 20th century. Minnie Francis Johnston was b. 8 July 1872 and d. 12 Feb 1941. Her middle name is Francis, but often misspelled "Frances." Her mother was a Francis, and Minnie's middle name was for this family. That's about all I know about the Francis family, except that there were a couple of brothers, a sister Ethel, and another one named Mary; and we heard that her father was once the miller at Evergreen Mills. They were active in some of the Methodist Camp Meetings of their day and I have a wonderful OLD photo of them with a lot of people in one of these meetings. That's about all I know of her ancestry. >

For those of you who were interested in the surname Francis. There is an obit in today's Washington Post online. The gentleman's name is Robert Francis and he was from Rockville.
Good morning Tosca, Yes, I am still in SC until May 1, and almost all my books and research are in Maryland. Oh well. I want to include two things. First is the following memo from my notes: In notes from Aunt Nell, she states that Enoch Francis lived at Goose Creek Bridge, and built the covered bridge where the Dulins used to live. His son John kept the toll gate house. This memo is from my grandmother's sister. They all grew up in Loudoun and knew members of the Francis family. The second is a message I received from Marty this AM and my reply. I hope she doesn't mind my putting it up.: Dear Betty, It was late last night when you and Tosca were writing, but I think a gremlin crept in. Do you really think Wm E. Francis, born before 1778, had a "brother" Thomas born in 1806? Perhaps a half-brother, with a much younger mother, but even that is stretching it a bit. Maybe the first son Thomas, b. 1803, died and the second man with the same name, born 1806, was another son. If this second Thomas really was born in Wales, he is more likely a cousin of some variety, don't you think? Food for thought, Ms. Marty Hiatt, CG Certified Genealogist and CG are proprietary service marks of the Board for Certification of Genealogists® used by the Board to identify its program of genealogical competency and evaluation and used under license to the Board’s associates. Actually, both dates are 'say' dates, based on 20 years before their marriages. If the birth date for Thomas is correct, he was only 39 at the time of his death. Their is lots of room there for Thomas to be much older than a dob of 1806 would indicate. I don't have any idea where William Enoch Francis was born. He could also have been born in Wales. I do not have this well documented. Some is from my Aunt Nell's (grandmother's sister) notes, and some is from a Francis descendent. I did goof. Woke up thinking about it this morning. I think I indicated that Ann and Rebecca, wife of John Dulin did not go west. That should have read Ann Dulin married to Enoch Francis, and John Dulin married to Rebecca Elgin. Thanks for the thought provoking message. I think I will put this on the Loudoun list with both messages included. Betty I think it is quite possible for Leanna to be Thomas' second wife. I do not know anything that would make that impossible. I also do not know anything to prove that. ;-) I think I missed two sons of Enoch when I was writing last night, Edward married Ann Wildman, and Lewis married Elmira Norton. I do not have dob for them. BTW, Ann Dulin is my 3rd great grandaunt. I am trying to remember who sent me a lot of the Francis info. When it comes back to me I will let you know. He is not on line so he won't pipe up here. Hi Betty, I need to go to bed as it is 11 pm already, but, do you happen to know the date of this: Loudoun Co Will Index: Francis, Enoch Inv- 2C 30; Acct 2A- 386 & 138, and Accts 2D 280 Accts 2C 317. I am sorry that I dont even know where I got that info! Possibly from my closest "fellow researcher" who made a list of all sorts of records at the Loudoun Courthouse for us. There have been many postings about Thomas Francis of Chester, PA b 1759 who married Mary Huey 1786, who happened to die in 1823. It is claimed by some of the researchers that he is the one who died abt Aug 31 1845. They had two daughters Mary Ann (Edward Wilson and at least 4 children-Edward Francis, Mary Ellen, Andrew J. and Sarah Virginia) and Elizabeth (John G. Myers, dau Elizabeth Frances b Upperville, Loudoun Co, VA 1823.) Al Fechlia's book "Francis History of Fauquier, Co, VA" speaks of Andrew Francis, of Maryland? and then Fauquier with sons Alexander (Millicent Ann Lovelace) went to MD, Margaret (the only female proven as she is buried next to or in plot of Broad Run Baptist Cemetery, New Baltimore, Fauquier Co, Va, belonging to Andrew Francis, Jr.), Thomas b abt 1765 (Mary ??, of Fauquier with a son William Enoch b abt 1782), Joseph (Sibella/Sabitha Holmes, of Fauquier), William, Patrick Henry (Sarah Cockrell and lots of children to WV), Henry (Rebecca) of Fauquier, and Andrew, Jr (Elizabeth Hume, many children, of Fauquier.) I have many references to E. and Enoch Francis in Fauquier Minute Books. One reference says E. Francis (Loudoun) I have only one Enoch Francis census record: 1820 VA LOUDOUN NO TWP LISTED Series: M33 Roll: 137 P 143 Francis, Enoch 1M -10 2M 10-16 1M 16-18 2M 16-26 1M 45+ 2F -10 1F 26-45 0 For'n 6 Agri Needless to say, I am thoroughly confused. Is it possible that Thomas Francis who was married to Mary Huey remarried Leannah Gulick 9 Feb 1826 in Loudoun Co, 3 years after Mary's death? How do you know 1806 for his dates (1806-1845)? If he immigrated from Wales, that might lead us to William Enoch also being from Wales? I've got to go to bed - it is now 11:33. I would love to stay up most evenings working on these puzzles, but need my sleep too! Any insight you can give me will help. You are most gracious to have replied so quickly. Are you still in SC, where Pat Duncan said you were? If so, have a good time while you are there. Tosca, I just realized, WEF also had a brother Thomas Francis (b.1806-1845) He married Leannah Gulick 9 Feb 1826 in Loudoun Co. His will is in Loudoun. I have that he immigrated from Wales, but I do not have a date. Tosca, I have a dob for William Enoch Francis of before 1778. He married Ann Dulin 17 Sep 1798. They had sons John(1 Sep 1800), Thomas(12 Feb 1803) and William(c.1814), and daughter Elizabeth A.(12 Dec 1816) who married Stephen W. McCarty. I have more information on all the children if you want. I do not have parents for William Enoch Francis. Ann Dulin(c.1782 Loudoun Co) was the daughter of Thaddeus(c.1749 Fairfax Co.) and Elizabeth Powell(1750-a. 1828 b.Fairfax Co.) Thaddeus and Ann were married 1769 in Fairfax Co. Lots of brothers and sisters. Elizabeth Powell was the daughter of Joseph Powell and Sarah Overhall. I do not have more on either line. Thaddeus Dulin was the son of John Dulin (c.1718-a.1791) and Winifred Atwell (c.1734-b. 1791) John was the son of William Dulin(g) (c1690-c1757) and Elizabeth (-1760). That is the end of the Dulin line. I do not have any more on Winifred Atwell. William Enoch Francis and Ann Dulin's son Thomas and his wife Sarah Mount had a son William Enoch Francis(1832-1855). Does this help? As you can see, all I have as a dob is 'before 1778' I have not found another WEF during that time frame, so either, or actually both if they are the same person, could be this William Enoch Francis. The sons could easily be named after (1) John for Ann's grandfather, (2) Thomas for Enoch's father. I find that he is normally found as Enoch Francis. About 1800, Thaddeus Dulin and his entire family left Loudoun and went west EXCEPT, Ann who was married to Enoch Francis, and Rebecca who was married to John Dulin. Let me know if you want an entire print-out with footnotes. Hi Betty, Could you please give me a short lesson? You have a (first cousin 4 times removed) William Enoch Francis married to Ann Dulin. Could you please let me know his dob and place, his parents names if you know them, Ann's dob and her parents names?
