    1. Re: [VALOUDOU] Hipkins/Hammerly
    2. Her son, Jacob T. Jacobs, was born in 1821. The 1850 census shows her as 48. There was a Emily Simpson, age 18, living with her in addition to others. Thomas was killed by lightning in 1823. "Genius of Liberty, Leesburg, VA" and "The Alexandria Herald", May 26, 1823, pg. 3. I have a copy of the article which is fairly long and tells the story in detail. He was in the house of James Mansfield on King Street. Jacobs was the proprietor. The lightning struck and demolished part of the chimney and descended to the lower floor. It badly injured 2 of Mansfield's children. Jacobs was standing inside by the door when the lightning struck him in the head. In Jacobs own house which was a few yards from Mansfield's, a big cat lying on the hearth was also killed by the lightning! I, too was told Elizabeth died in Mar 1860. However, I just pulled up the Mortality Schedule for 1870 and her date of death would be Mar 1870,, reported by family 147. I find that as being in Leesburg, Emily Loyd, age 33 and her four children, and a domestic Mary Lozenburg, age 17. So I will do a better search for 1860. What is the date when Jacobs was killed? 1. Re: [VALOUDOU] Hipkins/Hammerly
    2. Thank you so much, Betty! Seems that Elizabeth ? had 3 husbands that didn't live long after she married them. I know for sure Jacobs and Hammerly died not long after but haven't found anything on Hipkins; assume he did, too. All the documents from Loudoun have her married names on them and no middle initial or anything else to identify her. Some make reference to her father, but don't say who her father was! I can't find a marriage record for the one to Jacobs. They must have married outside of Loudoun Co. Since Wm. Hammerly was buried with his first wife, I think maybe Elizabeth is married with Jacobs or Hipkins but don't know where they are buried either although I have the newspaper article about Jacobs being struck by lightning and killed. She is definitely one of my biggest brick walls! At least now I know for sure she died in Loudoun and when so I can quit looking elsewhere for her. :) Thanks, again... Sorry, but I can't depend on my present provider. Betty Elizabeth Hipkins Hammerly died in March of 1860, in Loudoun County. William Hammerly, and John Hammerly (my 3rd great grandfather) were the sons of Garrett Hammerly and Comfort Simkins. William is buried in the Old Stone Church Cemetery in Leesburg with his first wife, Sarah Woody. John is buried in Union Cemetery, Leesburg. However, I suspect he and his wife, Jane Drish, were originally buried in the Old Stone Church Cemetery. John's son John was very active in the establishment of Union Cemetery and though I don't have proof, because John Sr died before the opening of Union, I believe he was moved by his son John, also a cabinet maker and undertaker. The Old Stone Church Cemetery was allowed to deteriorate badly during this period. In fact my mother remembered the stones being set to the sides so the High School could use the area to play tennis. 1. [VALOUDOU] Various Spellings of HAMMERSLY!
    2. RaySmith
    3. Dottie, I married a HOMESLEY and have HOMESLEY ancestors. Jeff Homersley in England says there is a good possibility that our two families are related. But he has no desire to go the DNA route to determine if such is so. Our HOMSLYs turn up in 1759 Cumberland Co., VA. She is Jane HOMSLY who was widowed in the same year. There are three children Benjamin HOMESLY is bound out to Robert BECK. Ann aka Nancy HOMESLY becomes the guardian of Stephen MOSBYon February 25, 1760. Lastly Joseph HOMSLY by court records dated February 23, 1761 is bound to James AIKEN. The dates come from Cumberland County Virginia Court Order book 1758-1762. We have Joseph's 1799 Lincoln County, NC will. Jane herself dies in 1761 with Rev. Mr. Robeert McLaurine her caregiver having to prove in court on February 23, 1761 her verbal will. Ship passenger list are of no help in determining when and where this family entered this country. I have not had a chance to look at ships from England to Virginia because they are in theVirginia Historical Library in Richmond. The South Carolina State Archives assure me this family did not enter at Charleston. To add to matters we do not know Jane's husbnds given name other than to surmise it was Benjamin also. Any suggestions etc. other than hire a professional genealogist. There is no Hammersley rootsweb list to turn to either. Thank you for reading this far. Ray Smith in Gaston County, North Carolina

    3. Thanks for the reply Sorting Williams is a trick sometimes. It is not unlikely that by 1830 William of John was deceased. Unfortunately I have not found a will or probate record in Fauquier indices that I have access to. This makes me believe they moved at some point after selling their farm. William (1763- )of John (1737-1798) is found in the 1810 Fauquier County census (listed conveniently as William of John), and a William that would fit him is found again in 1820 Fauquier census. Neighbors are fairly consistent so it is likely the same person. William's son William "Billy" was born in 1807 (Billy was my great great grandfather). I have seen the Ohio Co record and I don't think it is of either of these two Williams. I am hoping to find a probate record, will, deed or just run across someone that by some odd chance has these folks in their tree. Or someone like yourself who has run across a record that I might have overlooked. Thanks again. -----Original Message----- From: valoudou-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:valoudou-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tosca Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 9:14 PM To: valoudou@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VALOUDOU] Sunday Roll Call It is possible that William b 1763 at age 67 is deceased by 1830, isn't it? 1. [VALOUDOU] William Sample, born November 19, 1789, Loudoun Co., Virginia
    2. Thomas Davis
    3. Hello- The inscription on William Sample's 1844 tombstone (Union Hill Cemetery, St. Clair Co., Illinois) states he was born in Loudoun Co., Virginia on Nov. 19, 1789. He may have been the son of James and Sarah Sample, as they appear to have been the only Sample family residing in Loudoun Co. during the 1780's. Sarah was the child and step-child respectively of Catherine and John Thomas. Each had been married previously, John Thomas to Hanna Mead, with whom he had five children: Mary, Joseph, Thomas, Leonard Taylor and Martha. Catherine to Darrell (first name unknown to me) with whom she had three children: Sarah (Sample), John and Thomas. Catherine's eldest child, William Blinstone, had been born out of wedlock from a shipboard romance with Henry T. McCabe, en route from Ireland to the port of Alexandria, Va. The subsequent setting is Leesburg. where Henry's father was a publican, and the time frame probably the late 1760's as Catherine's children were grown at the time of her death in 1793, Her daughter, Sarah Sample, had died the previous year, leaving at least two small daughters, Catherine (b. ca. 1789) and Susannah. Son-in-law James Sample served as witness to Catherine Thomas' will. With death first of their mother, followed by the death of their grandmother, the two little girls were adopted out, with at least Catherine going to the Brown family, apparently friends, as a Brown served as executor of Catherine Thomas's will. Later, (August 12, 1812) Catherine married a son of the family, John Dogget Brown. As far as I know, William Sample does not appear in Virginia records, and I first come across his trail when he was 21, and serving in the illinois mounted militia. Later in that year, on June 12, 1812. William married Nancy Preston. They settled first in Randolph County, Ill., and then a few years later moved north to St. Clair Co. Their first son was named James, and their first daughter Sarah. Thanks for your patience in reading this long story. Any information helping connect William to James and Sarah Sample would be very much appreciated. Tom Davis
