Rootsweb had a breakdown night before last that lasted for several hours. Nothing was hardly coming through. One list administrator told me Rootsweb has three servors they use. So, I guess they are getting each one working on them as they go. I am now getting more postings coming through. This problem has been going on and off for quite awhile now. I don't know what the problem is. Marianne Dillow modonnell05@comcast.net wrote: Hi All, I was just wondering if any of you have had trouble with Ancestry mail? I have had several messages from people via the Ancestry automated service and have responded but never hear anything back. It strikes me as odd because most of them have shown interest and excitement about sharing info. I have doubts that the people ever receive my response. I wrote to Ancestry about it once but never received an answer. Thanks for any insight. Thank You Julie, I've just had a great time searching the "immigrantservants.com" site you listed below. I came up with several Holder indentured immigrants, one of who/whom is probably my ancestor. I then went to the LDS site, IGI and found a list of nine who fit the age criteria for my Holder. This list also tells from where they came in England. Wanda, the average time of indenture is given as 4-5 years with the average age being 15-24 years. It's such fun to find a new place to search! Has anyone been in contact with a Phyllis Lee from VA or know anything about her? I have lost contact with her and she had some pertinent information about my ancestor Philip Porter b 1750 who lived in Frederick Co. and Loudoun Co. VA. Then all of a sudden, she disappeared. I am concerned about her, as we had close connections. Moral of the story is that sometimes it is necessary when finding someone that knows something about your relatives, to get their snail mail address. I continue to try to reach her with no response. Any help will be so much appreciated. I can email her and it does not bounce. I wonder if anyone knows about the MSN ISP. Is there a way to contact them, to see if she is still listed? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Dottie Porter Himes Dottie (Porter) Himes Lewisport, KY 42351 djhimes@bellsouth.net
Attention Mena Mead, or whoever might have access to Loudoun Co. VA wills. How much work would it be for you to find a Will for a Porter, sorry I do not have first name about 1780-1800. I am still trying to find the parents of Philip Porter b. 1750 in VA. Some records show that he did live in Loudoun VA before moving to Taylorsville, KY. However his first 6 children were born in Pughtown, Frederick Co. VA His 8th child was born in KY. I do not want to overlook Loudoun Co. VA as there have been records that he also lived in Loudoun Co. VA before the moved to KY. Thank you in advance for checking for a Will. I have a number of given names that "possibly could be his father" but no proof. So if there is a will from a Porter, that lists a son, Philip Porter, it might be my only lead. Jan, By using Google for "snowden scott" I found the following: www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lane/6787/orchardfamily3.html It discusses the land sale from ORRAHUD spelled in at least three different ways on the site.Today the names appears as ORCHARD. An 2003 message board posting lists someone finding a Bible owned by Snowden SCOTT.Trying to return to descendant. Listings of marriages performed by SCOTT in Grant County, WV. Newspaper report of wife being confined to house with grip. More family details. Church of the United Brethren in Christ biographical sketch of SCOTT. Numerous males named after the minister. Sometimes I expanded the initial search to show "additional similar sites" or added "WV" or "Hampshire." Hope this helps. There were several listings quoting all or part of the land transfer. You may have found the other information above. I didn't find anything at rootsweb message lists archives except your request here. Happy hunting! MomSmith4
I recently saw an archived message from a family (Orahood) concerning sale of land by heirs. The sale took place about 1853 when the heirs sold 150 acres to a Snowden Scott. He is my great-grandfather and was born in Loudoun County in 1821 and died in Grant County, WV, in 1902. I'm not sure where the land was, but I would be interested in more information about that sale. I have checked information at my local library as well as online and haven't found anything. Could someone give me a suggestion? Thank you. Jan (Scott) Stoltenberg Illinois

The address is correct; I just tried it. It takes you to the page, "Chancery Records Index." Go to the bottom of the list on that page and choose "Start Searching." I just tried all four that I mentioned (King & Queen, Lancaster, New Kent, and Shenandoah) and I searched just on the first field for Smith and I got many hits. I was able to view the actual images. BTW, I saw a Smith/Chinn record in Lancaster Co. in case anyone is interested. If an address doesn't work, try going to the home page and work your way to the desired specific page. I searched on Google for Library of Virginia. In the hit that came up, I chose "What We Have." Then choose County and City Records>Collection Guides>The Chancery Records Index>Start Searching. You will then be at <http://www.lva.lib.va.us/ ChanceryWebQ/ChanceryBasicQuery.asp#basicdatastart> Valerie On Apr 11, 2008, at 9:18 PM, Pvilljane@aol.com wrote: > Unable to get the King & King, New Kent and Shenandoah Counties on- > line > Chancery Records index by using the web site given. > > Jane Bogle > > > > **************It's Tax Time!
