In doing research on my own Henry MOORE line, I found this excerpt from a paper entitled "Mary Monnet", by E. Pauline Brittain-Johnson, presented before the Delaware County, Ohio Historical Society, February 25, 1952, which reported a story written by J. R. Newhouse regarding the adventurous life of his grandfather, Anthony NEWHOUSE. = = = "Anthony Newhouse, the third son of the writer's great grandfather, was born in Louden County, Va., February 10, 1772. He was four years old when his father enlisted in the Revolutionary War, and 8 years old when his father died in the service. He remained with his mother and assisted in raising the family until 1784 when he enlisted in the army ordered out by General Washington for the suppression of the Whisky Insurrection in western Pennsylvania. The army was under the command of General Lee, of Virginia. Anthony Newhouse went with the army as far as Fort Pitt, now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He remained with the army six months and the insurrection being suppressed, he was discharged. He then returned to Louden County, where he remained six months. From there he went to Old Red Stone Fort in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He then became acquainted with Nancy Coons and married her March 28, 1799. From this place Anthony Newhouse and wife, his father-in-law, John Coons and family, and a man by the name of Henry Moore and his wife, all moved to the Territory of Ohio. They settled on Scippo Creek which is in the present limits of Pickaway county, Ohio, Salt Creek Township. They moved there in the early part of 1800, settled on a place formerly occupied by the Indians. The nearest settlement was Circleville, 13 miles, and Lancaster, 18 miles. They went from Fayette County, Pennsylvania, to the Ohio River in Virginia. There Anthony Newhouse put his wife and goods with the other families on the old fashioned reel boat, the only boat then running on the Ohio River. Anthony Newhouse and John Coons rode their horses, driving their stock before them. They took what was called the Ganes Track, a road cut out from Wheeling, W. Va., to Chillicothe, Ohio, by a man by the name of Ebeneezer Gane.” = = = I have no additional information beyond this interesting quote, but thought I would share it in case anyone in Loudoun County is researching the NEWHOUSE line. Sorry Group. When I tested it the first time it seemed to work. Here was the information about the Heritage Center that came to me via the King George Va listserv. I don't know if many know about the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center located at 900 Barton Street in Fredericksburg, VA. They have collections from Caroline County, Fredericksburg, King George County, Spotsylvania County and Stafford County.? They get more collections in every day and it would be worth it to check and see what they have.? If you can, stop by.? The staff is more than happy to help.? Come by and volunteer!? They would love the help.? You can also e-mail them at crhc@verizon.net or call them at 540-373-3704. They are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9 to 4.? Charlie, According to the information on Ancestry, Edwin Purcell was the son of Samuel Purcell and Margaret Copeland. Samuel was the son of Thomas Purcell and Mary Van Hook. Purcellville was named after Valentine Vernon Purcell, the son of Thomas Purcell and Lydia Vernon. Thomas Purcell was the son of Thomas Purcell and Mary Van Hook. Therefore Edwin and Valentine would have been first cousins. This information was submitted by other researchers so should be accepted with a the appropriate amount of caution. Patrick, Thanks, thanks for the note. I figured there was some connection, just did not know how. Our Templer folks lived around Purcellville area among others and then many of them went to Ohio before scattering further. When I found this marriage connection, the information I saw made me wonder about Loudoun County again. ----- Original Message ----- From: Janice Taylor To: doreatr@rbnet.com Sent: Tuesday, May 20, 2008 2:28 PM Subject: Purdum This is my Brickwall: I have never been able to find the surname of Mary, who was the first wife of Benjamin Purdum who died in Loudoun Co. His will names his sons Jeremiah (who married Mary__? and had daughter Priscilla who is my ancestor), and John who had evidently left home. The will of Benjamin Purdum, proved in Loudoun Co. in 1812, also mentions... "Thirdly - I will and bequeath unto my former wife's sister Lydia Jeans ("J" is questionable) or her heirs the just sum of one hundred dollars to be paid in twelve months after my decease. Fourthly - I will and bequeath unto my former wife's sister Deborah Bradock or her heirs the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid also in twelve months after my decease." I am also descended from one of the brothers of Benjamin Purdum who remained in Frederick/Montgomery Co., MD, so I have quite a bit of information on the family. The wife of Jeremiah Purdum is also unknown - does anyone have that information? Janice Beall Taylor jlbtaylor@verizon.net

I don't have one but that is a very good idea.... my mother's family has a cemetery that is up in the hills of W. Va. and off the beaten path. Once you get up there it is well maintained but yes, that is an excellent idea for those that only have a few stones etc. One thing I did with my father and 1st husband's graves..... they are next to one another...... now the cemetery is HUGE...... and I know what section.... and we always pin pointed it by a faucet that we parked by..... but the faucet come to find out is actually very off set from the stones.... and as bushes are removed etc that previously marked the spot..... it was always a challenge to find the stones..... walking in circles till we stumbled over them. SO..... last time I was there..... as I was taking pictures of family headstones anyway......... I walked back to the street in a direct line from the stones...... turned around and took a picture...... any bush, tree etc... was then in the picture. I know that doesn't always work because things are removed and changed but if you don't have a gps to mark the spot..... then that is an idea too.
