My apologies to the list, but this is the easiest way to contact subscribers: When I mailed Northern Virginia Genealogy in October, I included 2 sample copies, one addressed to my husband, and one to myself. His came in a week, my just arrived yesterday! If you are a subscriber to NVG, and have not received Vol. 6, please contact your postman. Thank you. Yes indeed I was watching that show. I have been as well as cousins have been pursuing our shearer line and have followed it back to George Shearer born approx 1777 but where we have no clues. We are an Irish line or Scot-Irish Armstrong County PA in 1830 but can't seem to locate any information that will help to find his father or place of birth. I am grasping at straws here but what the heck!! We were interested/amazed to see a desk on the show made 1770 in Loudoun County by John Shearer, appraised for $45,000. It was for a "Sarah Millhollern" --we think it was Sarah Millhollan or Millholland"-- and are going to pursue that. The owner was one "Kate".. I will check with a local man who is researching Loudoun cabinet makers... Meaznwhile, you might check with MESDA, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts: in 1995 I asked for a printout of Northern Virginia Craftsmen, early 1700s to early 1800s and Shearer really should be there but maddeningly, somehow I am missing the 5 pages he should be listed in. Some years ago, they went to each county and did an exhaustive search for information of local craftsmen. They are a WONDerful resource. If you telephone them at 9910-721-7360 (They are in Winston Salem NC), and give them the name and location, I believe they can look him up on the spot. The only charge, at least six years ago, was for xeroxing at 10 cents a page for their infor and postage. Good luck. If I find anything more, I'll let you know. One of the reasons ages may be incorrect on the census -- >From the Brunswick Herald, June 15, 1900: "The difficulty in securing the ages of women under the census enumeration, says the Boston Herald, has come up in the present census. This was to be expected; it always does. If there is anything that woman holds it to be impertinent for the public to inquire into it is the number of years she has been in this world. The trouble on this point is reported to have begun already in the South. A Richmond paper states the Chief Snead, of the Richmond Division, has been applied to be suffering and staggered enumerators to know what to do when women regard his inquiries anent their age as insulting and refuse to reply to them. 'Use diplomacy,' advises this resourceful and wily official. 'If a woman apparently 35 refuses to give her age, just tell her you are going to put her down as 45 on your list. I'll guarantee that will fix 'em all right.'" Pat Duncan p.duncan@worldnet.att.net
