    3. Our First ThanksgivingDonald has been kind enough to share this with me privately, but i want everyone to know about Virginia's FIRST Thanksgiving. Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2001 12:38 AM Subject: Our First Thanksgiving Rena -Hi I received the following information a couple of years ago pertaining our first Thanksgiving. Note the bold line at the bottom. Donald The First Thanksgiving Capt. John Woodlief at Berkeley Hundred, Virginia December 4, 1619 Capt. John Woodlief/[Woodliffe] was with the Jamestown settlers in 1609 - the Second Charter of the Virginia Company of London. He later returned to England to bring other colonists, as well as his wife and and family, to Virginia. Again he returned to England, and in 1619, Woodliffe, as captain and governor, sailed from Bristol on the good ship Margaret, bringing 36-38 settlers [historical accounts differ] to Berkeley Hundred along Virginia's James River. The Virginia Thanksgiving was essentially a prayer service. The very first in the list of written instructions to Woodliffe as captain stated: "Wee ordaine that the day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned for the plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetualy keept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty god." In 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy issued a proclamation recognizing Virginia's claim to the first Thanksgiving in America.

Thank you Joy -----Original Message----- From: John and Bronwen Souders [mailto:souders_j@mediasoft.net] Sent: Monday, November 19, 2001 10:26 PM To: VALOUDOU-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VALOUDOU-L] John Shearer, cabinet maker For Joy Fulgham and others, I have checked with the northern Virginia cabinet maker researcher and a chance mention to an antique dealer who remembered the name of this Scots Irish cabinet maker. I have only a small additional bit of information from that of watching Antiques Roadshow's segment on this man there identified with Loudoun County. One of my sources mentioned Shepherdstown, the other Martinsburg--both now West Virginia, at the time of this man's work at the turn of the 19th century, in Virginia--the man who said Shepherdstown is a retired antique dealer, had seen a few of the man's pieces over the years, and said that vertical drawer pulls (as shown in the Las Vegas piece-- were a feature of Shearer's work. He also remembered reading that Shearer had "died young". The man who researches furniture makers remembers seeing a piece at auction in Martinsburg, "a local piece attributed to John Shearer, a dropfront desk with secret compartments, God Save the King written inside, and of no particular distinction, that sold for $12,000 12 years ago." That's the best I can do. Bronwen Souders, Waterford, Loudoun County ==== VALOUDOU Mailing List ==== Have you posted your Loudoun Co. surnames lately? 2. Hi. my ancester's lived for a time, on the William Fulton Farm, in Loudoun county, Va. cir. 1840-59ish. William could be a brother or father of your James. My ancester's were Stephens/Stevens, Burgess, and Shackelford.

    1. [VALOUDOU-L] James FULTON, b. 1794
    2. I am searching for any information on James FULTON b. 1794, Loudoun Co.; married 1st Eliz. MCGEORGE, had 2 children: Mary Morgan and William Henry. Eliz. McGeorge died, and he married 2nd wife, Mary Ellen NEWMAN b.1811, VA. George and Mary had 8 known children: George Newman b. 1834 Loudoun Co., Robert James b.1836 Muskingham Co, OH, Virginia b. abt. 1838, Elizabeth, b. abt. 1840, Jane M. b. abt. 1843, Martha, b. abt. 1845, Samantha, b. abt. 1848 and John W. b. 1851. Although James FULTON and 2nd wife, Mary Ellen NEWMAN, relocated to Ohio after the birth of their 1st child, I am hoping I can find some connections in Loudoun Co. for their parents and siblings. Their 1st son, George Newman FULTON, later returned to the VA area with his wife, Sarah Ellen SCHAEFFER (SHAFFER, SHAVER) and became a well-known potter. One of his early large pieces is the 20-gal. crock made for Col. Crow who ran the Old Crow's Tavern. The crock is now housed at the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, WV. If you have any information on James FULTON, Mary Ellen NEWMAN, Elizabeth MCGEORGE or any of their children, please contact me. I am also very interested in information about my ggrandmother, Sarah Ellen SCHAEFFER. In particular, I need the parents and siblings of all the above. You may contact my privately at "bbooker955@aol.com". Thank you for your help.

    1. [VALOUDOU-L] Land Deed tracking in Waterford
    2. Bronwen, Hi, it's me Valerie from the James/Paxson families of Waterford that was down there in August. I did not make the festival due to emergency in the church I serve. I have a question. I have the deed from Elijah James and the land he owned. One section described borders the Quaker meeting house as it describes coming to a corner of it. Is there someone that can read it if I provide it and figure out about where the land actually was? I tried when there and it appears to be the land next door with the house of the young couple who is remodeling. I spoke with them and they thought it was from the description. Who can help with this? Thanks. also I can't find Carol Davis's address/email. do you have it? Valerie Johnson

    1. [VALOUDOU-L] Original Land Grants in Six Section by N. Schreiner-Yantis
    2. Marty Hiatt
    3. Nettie Schreiner-Yantis has completed the 3 western sections A, C & D (See NoVaGen Vol. 3, No. 3 for the layout, and Nettie's address). They cost $10 each, and can be ordered directly from Mrs. Schreiner-Yantis. Other things in her life have taken precedence so I don't believe there are any immediate plans to complete the remaining 3 sections. Many grants from section E & F are available on the Deed Mapper web site. (think this is www.deedmapper.com) Ms. Marty Hiatt, CGRS "Document what you find, listen to what you are told, and especially, love and respect your work." 2. Dear Paula: I have been researching Loudoun County for almost 20 years for my gggrandfather, William ALLBRITAIN, born 1791. There is an adult John ALLBRITAIN in the records, who must be his father (since he's the only ALLBRITAIN of any spelling variation in Virginia at that time) but there is no proof. I've visited the courthouse at Leesburg several times, for a will or deed that might help me, without success. Could you check your records - perhaps I missed something. Thanks for you help.
