    1. [VALOUDOU-L] Trip to Loudoun County
    2. donald adams
    3. I am researching the families of William Adams (1796-1846) and Nelson S. Hutchison (1793-1825). I will be in Loudoun County for 2-3 days at the end of May and would like for the advice of the mailing list as to where to concentrate my research efforts. I have maps for the location of several sites (Adams Grist Mill, Old Ebenezer Cemetery, etc) and have lots of info on census, courthouse records, cemetery records, etc. Any input would be welcomed. Thanks, Carol Adams

    3. Ruthie, There were a lot of Janneys in Waterford: your mention of Old Wheatland Road though makes me think first of Millard Fillmore Janney who had a mill at Wheatland on present route 287--do you have a first name? or a date range? 2. Marty Hiatt
    3. I don't know what kind of material was used to make newspapers between 1900 and 1920 but it wasn't good. The newspapers printed during those years deteriorated more than before or after 1900 or 1920. Another researcher and I have searched for information from this time frame, in particular the "teens" and find only sporadic issues available from Loudoun, Fairfax, and Fauquier Cos. Thomas Balch Library has the Loudoun papers (probably titled The Mirror) in 1909. Because of where the Grubbs lived in the county, may I also suggest you widen your search to include Brunswick & Frederick, Maryland and Jefferson Co., WV. Most of the papers published a column called something like, "News from the neighboring counties." I found a Washington, DC death reported in a Fauquier Co. newspaper because the man was buried in Leesburg. 2. My lineage is thus: Father: Logan Thomas Jenkins Grandfather: William Franklin ("Bud") Jenkins Great Grandfather: Henry Thomas Jenkins Great, Great Grandfather: William Harris Jenkins married to Jemima Hugley. fought under Capt. Temple Smith with Va. Militia at Fort McHenry in War of 1812. (also had a brother Charles Tyler Jenkins who returned to Fairfax, Va and died there. William and Jemima are buried between Mt. Juliet and Nashville, Tennessee in the Castleman Cemetery in west Wilson County. Then of course there are more ancestors in Virginia and it traces back to Nicholas Jenkins in Purleigh, Essex County, England who was buried around 1630, Sincerely, Logan Thomas Jenkins, Jr. at Jenkinsrawhide@aol.com Lebanon, Tennessee

    2. Guess we might qualify as "cousins", since my lineage goes back to Nicholas Jenkins in Purleigh, England. The oldest grave I have actually found is that of my great , great grandfather William Harris Jenkins who fought in the War of 1812 at Ft. McHenry and was married to Jemima Hugley. He is buried in middle Tennessee. I am having computer hard drive problems so may not be able to correspond, so wanted you to know I was not ignoring you. 1. Re: [VALOUDOU-L] Harrison Jenkins & Delilah Jenkins
    2. Hi again, In my last message I said Delilah was the daughter of the elder Elijah Jenkins and Rebecca, and that Harrison was her husband and that Tavenner's Papers at the Balch Library support this theory, too. I was too quick with the Tavenner statement. After rereading his Jenkins entries, I found that he has Harrison Jenkins as the son of Elijah and Rebecca Jenkins. I don't know where he got his information, but I don't think he is correct; I think Delilah was the daughter of the elder Elijah Jenkins and wife Rebecca. Also, if you draw a pedigree chart of these entries in Tavenner's Papers, you'll see that some of the dates don't seem to fit. Of course, it's difficult to read his writing as it's so small. Valerie

Harrison and Delilah are mentioned a few >places. .................................. You might be interested in what I found out about this. I was fortunate to get a recommendation for a lady in Florida who is considered to be an authority on the Jenkins who lived near the borderline between Fairfax and Loudoun counties. She has studied the laws of inheritance in regard to women, in Virginia, and how old legal papers were written -- deeds, chancery cases, etc. Her opinion is that it is Delilah, who is the daughter of the elder Elijah Jenkins and Rebecca, and that Harrison is her husband. I have more on this. After studying her reasons to support this, I agree with her. BTW, Tavenner's Papers at the Balch Library support this theory, too. Possibly Harrison is the son of Thomas Jenkins (see Amelia Gilreath's Jenkins books). I need to find more on this. >What I did not know was anything about Harrison's >death. I presumed that he outlived Delilah, because >in a book of marriages in the Loudoun Courthouse, the >listing for Elijah Jenkins and Charlotte Everhart >listed only Elijah's father Harrison, with a blank in >the space for his mother. I forgot that, but now that you mention it, I remember thinking that too. I saw Elijah and Charlotte's marriage in the marriage register at the courthouse. It was dated 26 Jan 1882. Even so, if Harrison Jenkins died in 1875, that would still leave from 1875 to 1882 for Delilah to get remarried and then die before Elijah's marriage in 1882. Another possibility is that whoever gave the info on the parents in the marriage register, knew the husband's father's name, but didn't remember the husband's mother's name. Keep in mind that Delilah Jenkins was alive in the 1870 census. FWIW, I did notice that in the tax books at the Loudoun courthouse that Harrison Jenkins had been paying tax in the years 1870+, but in a few years, maybe 1873-74 timeframe he does not appear in the tax book. I need to check my notes on this. Another thing, there is a Harrison Jenkins listed (no dates) in the Fairfax County, Virginia GraveStones books, Vol.1 (by Fairfax Gen. Soc.), in Arnon Chapel Cemetery in Great Falls. He seems to be a more recent Harrison Jenkins, but he could be the older one. Or he could be the son of the elder Harrison Jenkins. There is also a Delia L. Jenkins (b. 1907) near by, and a William L. Jenkins (b. 1867), plus a few other Jenkins. Could possibly this Delia be a daughter of William Jenkins, who might be a son of the elder Harrison Jenkins? Food for thought! >If you are interested in more information Would you know if Harrison Jenkins or any of his children fought or participated in the Civil War? Civil War records might uncover more info on the family. Great to hear from you! Thanks for any help you can provide, Valerie

    1. Re: [VALOUDOU-L] Harrison Jenkins & Delilah Jenkins
    2. It was great to see your question about Harrison and Delilah Jenkins; they are my direct ancestors. Although I don't have much information about them, this is what I know: I am a descendent of Harrison and Delilah Jenkins. You mentioned in your previous e-mail that they had a son Elijah. Elijah was my great-grandfather. He married Charlotte (or Lotta) Everhart and lived just outside Leesburg, VA. When Elijah died in 1908 (after their children had grown and moved out) Charlotte sold their home and moved to Chesterbrook/McLean, VA, to live with/near her daughter, my grandmother, Inez Jenkins Stalcup. Elijah and Charlotte are buried in Union Cemetary in Leesburg, VA, in a plot with other Everhart relatives. [I have been to their gravesite, and I also was able to visit their home in Leesburg that they sold in 1908 before it was torn down last summer!] I do not have much information about Harrison and Delilah. Most of my information is second-handed, including quite a bit of info from the book you mentioned (although I do not have the latest version of it; I will have to contact the author and get an update on what I have). I did some research at the Loudoun courthouse and found the records mentioned, and the will of Harrison's father, another Elijah Jenkins. Harrison and Delilah are mentioned a few places. Although I have not seen an original marriage record, I have seen an on-line compilation of Washington DC marriage records that includes a marriage of Harrison and Delilah at about the right time. What I did not know was anything about Harrison's death. I presumed that he outlived Delilah, because in a book of marriages in the Loudoun Courthouse, the listing for Elijah Jenkins and Charlotte Everhart listed only Elijah's father Harrison, with a blank in the space for his mother. [I am currently at the office and my detailed records are at home, so I am speaking from memory right now.] I would love to get as much information as I can about Harrison and Delilah and anything else you have on this family. If you are interested in more information I have, such as more about Harrison's parents and ancestors, please let me know. Thanks! 2. I got lucky and found a lady who has researched the Jenkins line back to 1630 where ancestor Nicholas Jenkins was buried in Purleigh, Essex County, England. Her book is "The GrandParents" and costs $41.50 which includes the shipping and handling. It will be the best money you have spent thus far if you want the lineage, sure saved me lots of time. Contact her or mail her a check to: Amy Gilreath 14200 Vint Hill Road, Nokesville, Virginia 20181 Your Harrison and Delilah are mentioned in a lawsuit on page 270 and 271: "19 Sept. 1846-Loudon Co. , Va. , Chancery Suit M-2567 Wm. Jenkins, adm. for Elijah Jenkins, dec'd., Samuel L. Jenkins and Nancy his wife, Rebecca Jenkins, widow of Intestate, Harrison Jenkins and Delilah his wife, Charles Jenkins, Sampson Jenkins, and Catharine Jenkins, the last of whom is a lunatic.....(Note:) William Jenkins, son of Elijah Jenkins was born 1806)" also here is another: 1838 Loudon Co., Va. Chancery Suit Jenkins vs Jenkins T-122 Thomas Jenkins (d. ca 1828)-(Samuel, Samuel, John, Nicholas, Nicholas)-had sons Thomas & Harrison Jenkins. They sue Catherine Jenkins, widow of Thomas Jenkins dec'd. & infant sons (Thornton Jenkins, Bronaugh Jenkins & Wm. Thomas Jenkins) for their part of father's estate. Witness Elijah, half bro. of Thomas Jenkins & William, son of Elijah Jenkins....(Note: Thomas Jenkins was married to Catherine (*Williams) and had sons Thomas Jenkins and Harrison Jenkins (*Burr Williams is brother in law to said Thomas Jenkins dec'd)...Catherine (Williams) Jenkins, widow of Thomas Jenkins married 2nd Amos Jenkins, son of Sylvester Jenkins, on 29 May 1829. They had sons Thornton Jenkins, Bronough Jenkins & Wm. Thomas Jenkins.) That is all the mention I see of Harrison and Delilah in this book but countless other Jenkins's of the family tree are mentioned. Think you would like it. 1. [VALOUDOU-L] Harrison Jenkins & Delilah Jenkins
    2. Hi Folks, I'm looking for information about Harrison Jenkins (b. abt 1810). I found him in the 1870 census for Loudoun Co., living near Farmwell. He and his wife, Delilah, had the following children: Nancy, Allen, Elijah, Rebecca, Harrison, William, Sampson, and Nellie. There may also have been two other daughters, Ellen and Virginia, who died before the1870 census, as they are in the 1860 census for Fairfax Co., but are not listed with the family in 1870. It is possible that the Harrison Jenkins mentioned above died near Dranesville, in Loudoun or Fairfax County, in March 1875, as there was an obituary notice in the Alexandria Gazette for a Harrison Jenkins of Dranesville who died in March 1875. I may also have found his and Delilah Jenkins (maiden name) marriage record in DC in 1844. I'd like to know when did Harrison Jenkins die and where was he buried. Also, what happened to Delilah after Harrison's death? As she was only 50 years old when he died, she may have remarried. Any info on either of them would be great. Since Harrison and Delilah had a large family, there should be many descendants living today in Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Hopefully someone can help. Valerie

Think and Write Globally By Kevin Sheppard shepk@hotmail.com I am very fond of RootsWeb and the services it offers. I can't help feel though that despite its international reach through the Internet, it remains very USA-centric. Stories in the latest Rootsweb Review begin like: "The 1930 federal census will be released 1 April by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)." .... no they won't -- our (Australian) federal census data is never released. Could you please encourage RootsWeb submitters IN GENERAL to mention the country that they are talking about. Similarly, I constantly encounter surname message board postings such as "John W. Smith m. Mary Jones 1878 KY" -- I am left totally perplexed by the KY. Please don't bother telling me where to find decodes -- rather, please encourage your submitters to think globally. Your American readers would be similarly perplexed if I was to mention "John W. Smith m. Mary Jones 1878 WA" and would be just as disinterested in having to learn the abbreviations (minus country) for the states of Australia. My family originated from the UK [United Kingdom] and appears to have traveled and settled widely during the 19th century. So researchers who limit their requests to something like KY are unlikely to ring any bells for me, whereas if they mention the full city name, state name and country name, they might strike a chord with some old family story. Your Message Boards could assist "the rest of us" by offering a drop- down list of countries that must be clicked before submission, and including a country or country-code in the subject line. Please encourage your readers to think globally, and discourage them from assuming we are all in the same country, and from using two-letter state or county abbreviations.
