Has anyone seen any information on the 5th VA Reg. under the command of Burgess Ball? Could someone with a Loudoun Co. marriage book do a look up for me? John Gardner Clare married Sarah Susan Wort/Wert after the census in June 1850 and 1 Aug 1854 when their son Albert was born in Wytheville Co., VA. There is no record that they married in Roanoke Co., Wythe, Montgomery or Botetourt. His family was from Botetourt then Montgomery. Just grasping at straws. Thanks for any help. Sarah Susan Wort/Wert's parents were David Wort and Martha Cleage Custard. Clare

Hello, I noticed your email to Craig. I am interested in finding information about a person that I think lived in Loudoun and possibly married there. Would you be able to guide me to site that I might be able to obtain some help from. With thanks Lee Queensland Australia.
Shelvy, I don't know if there is a Shoemaker connection but I think there be. My great Uncle was named Jerry Harper Shoemaker and there had to be a reason to use a surname for a middle name. I haven't found it and Shoemaker's went to Loudoun County after coming in to Philadelphia. In my "Shoemaker Pioneer Book" my husband found while I was writing this. Amy Shoemaker b.1761 m. Benjamin Harper Cheltenham Twp., PA Edward Shoemaker m. Fiannia Harper..........something about Shoemakersville, Benango Co. PA. Children were: Owen; Emma; Charles; Tilman; Ella; and Oliver. I sure haven't been much help but I guess I am searching a Shoemaker book and not a Harper one. I will keep your email just in case. Good luck Tootsie Shoemaker T. Hi Shelvy, Thanks for posting your interest to the list. I believe we have recently exchanged HARPER info through your friend Nancy. Please feel free to contact me off-list if you have any questions about the data. Hi Bronwen, Thank you for your wonderfully detailed comments and ideas. Your postings always contribute so much to the general body of knowlege for Northern Loudoun. I will pursue all of the SANDS names you have mentioned. I have also placed postings on several Rev.War lists and messages boards, including one for Loyalists. I suspect this issue of "The Select Sharpsburg Militia" chasing and capturing Loyalists in Northern Loudoun County may well be interesting to Loudoun list members for a variety of historical and genealogical reasons, so I will follow up with more information as I develop it. Kind regards to all, Craig Lovettsville
I have already emailed Lee and given him the limited information there is in Loudoun on his John Widdicombe. This Widdicombe was in Loudoun for less than 20 years before moving west. Hi Craig, You have me intrigued too. The Waterford area had a Sands family but being Quakers they are unlikely to be military(though not impossible. I've found a Hough tombstone in the Quaker cemetery in Waterford that was a gift of the DAR in memory of his service.)These names were Isaac and wife Mary whose son Jonah was born 1775: HE was married to a Janney at Goose Creek (now Lincoln VA) Meeting House. We also have one Edmund Sands already owning land adjoining the 400 acres sold by Catesby Cocke to Edward Norton on May 1, 1760 "on the west side of Kitoctin Mountain near the top..." (Loudoun County Deed Book A p. 480) From a John Divine list made from Deed Abstract of Fairfax County 1742-1752 (ie, before Loudoun County was formed from it), Edmund Sands is listed, along with other Loudoun County names, as a cordswainer. Another land transaction re Edmund Sands and wife Rachel (she is illiterate) 200 acres he purchased 4 December 1742 (Fairfax Deed Book E p. 42) from John Barclay he then sells to John Barclay per Fairfax Deed Book C pp/. 218-222 30 April-1 May 1751 (Agasin, this is Loudoun-to-be land...). One Jacob Sands' estate pays Edward Dorsey of Waterford $9.50 for a coffin in late 1814. (Loudoun County Will Book M, p. 238.) So, take your pick. Obviously there WERE Sands in the approximate area; but your General may well not be any of these. Good luck! War in Loudoun: (Tory) General SANDS?? I am in the process of transcribing the Revolutionary War Pension Application for Christian TROUT and ran into some very intriguing passages that mention a Tory (American loyal to the British) general by the name of "SANDS" that apparently lived along the Potomac on the northern reaches of Loudoun County. As background, Christian TROUT was born in Sharpsburg, Washington, MD in 1753, was raised there, and in May 1778, joined "The Sharpsburg Select Militia" under the command of Captain Joseph CHAPLINE, Jr. (son of Joseph Sr, the founder of Sharpsburg), in Colonel Jones' Regiment of Maryland Militia. During the course of four enlistments, Christian TROUT continued in active-duty militia service until October of 1780. Most of his service was spent in chasing Tories and then guarding both them and captured British soldiers jailed at various times in Sharpsburg, Hagerstown, and at "The Barracks" in Frederick. Of interest to Loudoun County readers (and the basis of my question) is the Sharpsburg Militia operations to capture Tories in Loudoun County. Specifically, in March of 1780, his unit (perhaps then under Captain Sisox) crossed the Potomac River into Loudoun County at Lucketts Ferry (just up river from Landers, MD, several miles below Brunswick, MD), camping there briefly, then commencing efforts to "proceed to arrest one General Sands, a Tory general... [who] lived on the Potomac River some distance... " They did not successfully capture General Sands, but they did capture his brother and several others, taking the Tory prisoners back to "The Barracks" in Frederick. I am totally intrigued. Has anyone ever heard of a Tory general by the name of SANDS living along the Potomac River in Northern Loudoun County? Obviously, he also had an adult brother at home with him. The fact that SANDS is referred to as a general suggests that he was a man of property and held in very high regard by the British. In truth, his "forces" were probably very meager at best, but exaggerated by the loyalists or the British for propaganda purposes. On occasion, Tories did form loyalist militia units, but I had not been aware of such units in Loudoun County. Has anyone read anything else about Maryland Militia units chasing Tories in Loudoun County in March of 1780? I do not know if this Christian TROUT is my line, but my Paul TROUT (TRAUT/DRAUT) and son Casper TROUT lived on the Loudoun side of the Potomac overlooking the Lucketts Ferry area by the end of the Revolution. I am searching all TROUT's living close by during that time period to search for any connections. Best regards to all, Craig H. Furnace is tiny village just outside Leesburg on Rt 15 North towards Frederick MD. We will do simple queries if you can be specific as to your needs. Hi Barbara: I have been studying your message and I found that I have a Daisy Hitaffer who married Walter Powell on 11/9/1893. Could this be your Thomas W. Powell?
