    3. Thanks for the reply, my dates could be wrong my aunt said she thought those were the dates after your post i talked to her again about it and she said your dates sounded more like it. She also told me that my great aunt Pleasant was working in Leesburg when all this went on. I feel so bad for all the victims of this tragady. My Aunt also said that they did not have time to do this horibably think to geat Aunt Pleasant because she ran away before it could happen. Im sorry for rambling i just wanted to say thanks for the reply. Marilyn

    3. The Richmond Times Dispatch has recently had some articles on possible reparations to families of some of the girls that were sterilized. I was not aware of any individual "stealing" the girls or whatever, but I would suspect if you go to The Washington Post website, or the Richmond Times Dispatch website and do a search for articles on sterile or sterilization you might be able to read some of what has recently come to light. I grew up believing that this only happened to those who were incarcerated at the Staunton facility for mentally impaired persons - both males and females, but perhaps I misunderstood all of the ramifications involved. I have never seen anything about it in my family research, nor known anyone personally involved.

    3. Marilyn, I think your aunt's story has some validity but I rely on other readers of the list in the Loudoun area to remember more details. A recent--past month or so--article in the Washington Post wrote about these sad cases, and much more recently than you cite, of sterilizations of girls, perhaps in the Staunton area? Help me, members... I had not heard of the ripple effect of children hearing about a man coming and running away as a result. That could explain family members' suddenly disappearing. On the contrary, I had heard of DC girls who had gotten pregnant in the 1940s and 50s who were sent to Leesburg--one man in his 70s I recently spoke to mentioned at least one home he remembered that took in such girls--for the term of their pregnancies. The infants were often quietly given up for adoption to new local families (arranged by Dr. Wynkoop, the local gynecologist who only died in the last 10 years or so), and the girls returned to their families in DC. I was talking to my aunt who is 72 and she told me a strange story about my great Aunt Pleasant when she was a chid in Loudoun County, Virginia that a man came and took some of the girls from Loudoun County to Statton Virginia between 1912-1915 where they did some pretty bad things to these girls, experiments on them and made them streile. My great Aunt Pleasant was so scared that she ran away from there to Baltimore Md. and lived out her life there. Has anyone come across anything like this in their research if so let me know please. Virginia...watching replies to your query...I don't have the Union Cemetery book only the New Jerusalem which is the OLD cemetery behind the church but I checked in that and found nothing on either Younkin or Firestone. I did find the following in the St. James United Church of Christ Church Register of Loudoun County, VA translated from German to English by Jerry and Tedi Jeen Mower: Pg. 12: George born 10 October 1793; bap. 26 Dec 1793; parents: Johann Juncken; godparents: Jacob Adams and wife. Pg. 23: Rudolph Junckin and w/Elisabeth parents of Samuel b. 2 Sep 1798; bap. 31 Mar 1799; Wit: John Junkin and w/Chatharina. Don't know if any of this help...good luck! Looks like you got a lot of response! Shelvy

    3. Virginia, Barbara, Cathy and all; Are these Younkins part of the same family that is found in the Turkeyfoot Township area of Somerset County, PA? If so, I am interested in their migration patters. Did they move from Loudoun to Somerset? This is one of the families associated with my May family in Somerset, and I know there were Mays at the New Jerusalem church early on but do not have the details. I am not sure if these Mays are the same as my family, but the Ansel(l) family at New Jerusalem was another family associated with my Mays later on in Somerset. Virginia, Regarding your interest in TUSHIMER....The name should actually be Dorscheimer, but I have seen it spelled various ways with a 'T'. I have never come across any information that Jacob and Clara Dorscheimer had a daughter named Catherine. In the St. James United Church of Christ there is a record of birth for Maria Magdalena, born 12 Dec 1789, daughter of Johannes Junken and mother Catharina. Godparents were Jacob Dorsheimer and his wife Clara. I would be interested to hear more from anyone who has information on Catharina. Cathy clauer@oregonvos.net

    3. I am trying to find any information about my ggrandmother Frances (Fannie) BEACH. Born about 1849 in Virginia?, Maryland? or Washington, DC? I have seen information which names all three as her birthplace. Her mother's name may have been either Susan or Jane. Father's name unknown. She was married to Denis J. SULLIVAN although I have no proof that a marriage actually took place. They had a daughter, Grace, born about 1871 in Virginia? according to the 1880 census by which time they were living in Staten Island, NY. Any information as to her actual place of birth greatly appreciated. --- Charles Holtzback --- charles1928@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
