Thanks for the Combs site from me also. I was just beginning to research the Combs family. Daniel and Lettie Combs Feagin. They are my ancestors. We are an Illinois branch of Derry descendants. We have some idea where we fit under the Derry family tree, but are hungry for additional details. We descend from Baltzer Derry (1740? - 1808, buried in Loudoun County, VA) married to Barbara Heinkley; their son Philip Derry (1774 - 1826, buried in Loudoun County, VA) married to Margaret Barbara Everhardt (1776 - 1862); their oldest son Christian Derry (1795 - 1858, buried in Loudoun County, VA) married to Susannah Carnes; their son James Madison Derry (1822 - 1905 buried in Menard County, Illinois) married to Cordelia Amanda Kalb (decease 1854); second marriaged to Martha Jane Pollock in 1861. Would Baltzer Derry happen to be listed in the Oath of Allegiance records for Maryland? If so, were his brothers also listed? All help is greatly appreciated. This is probably not what you are looking for. It is the Resolution of 1774. But it may have some names that are helpful. < http://www.combs-families.org/combs/records/va/loud74.html > Gloria in MD GALBINAK@aol.com
What listings I have found on the Oaths of Allegiance/Fidelity have been on Ancestry.com. They have several Maryland counties from 1778. They also offer a data base of the "Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly" which lists the Pittsylvania Co. VA Oaths from 1777. In the 1777 list was the name William Devine (along with James & John Devine) which was not unusual since there seems to be a good deal of documentation on the Devine/Divine/Devin family in Pittsylvania Co. VA. My problem lies in the fact that during the same time periods there is also a Divine family in Loudoun Co. VA which seem to share many of the same given names. I am hoping to find whether or not my group of Divine's took the Oath of Allegiance/Fidelity in Loudoun or if they perhaps were connected to another location during that time. I realize that not all residents took the Oath (although it would have been against their interest to refuse) but since the Divine's continued to live in Loudoun I assume that they were not loyalists and at some point had documented their allegiance...hopefully in Loudoun. I have not had the opportunity to check further into Loudoun Oaths but when I do get back to it - if I find anything - I certainly will post it to the list. Thank you for your help and interest, Susan McIntyre ========== I wonder if the data bases referred to are online anywhere? Hi, My Derry ancestors took the oath in Frederick Co., MD. Found in MD Gen. Soc. Bulletin Vol 27 (1986) around pp. 109. Perhaps they lived there then? I don't know. There was a lot of traffic back and forth over the river. Phyllis

Thank you Robert L. Cummins, I will check with the DAR to see what they have to offer on Loudoun Co. Oaths of Allegiance/Fidelity. I am new to this list and am looking for information regarding the marriage of Elizabeth Travers Chinn and John Wilson married June 8, 1796. Janean Ray
There is one but I can't tell you where it is. Does anyone on the list have any idea if there is a list of Loudoun Co. VA residents who took the Oath of Allegiance/Fidelity in the 1770's? There seem to be a few data bases for the Oaths taken in Maryland and I even discovered a listing for Pittsylvania Co. VA - but has anyone found one for Loudoun Co. VA? Thanks for any help or advice, Susan McIntyre
I am new to this list and wanted to just put my name out there to see if I get any bites. I am researching particularly Rawleigh Chinn Wilson. Parents are John Wilson b. abt.1772 and died 1821 in Middleburg VA. He was married to Elizabeth Travers Chinn. The Chinns were very prominent family in Middleburg and her ancestors actually bought the land originally and it was then called Chinn's Crossroads. I can't find anything on John Wilson's family and hoping someone might be able to break up this brick wall of mine. Janean Ray.

I understand now. Thanks so much for the clarification. Sandy "P. Duncan" wrote: > Jonah Hood is not a district, but the name of the person who took the > information in that particular area. > > Pat Duncan > p.duncan@worldnet.att.net >
Chiming in on the Pearce portion here but probably with more questions than answers. I descend from Hector Pearce born 1799. Census says he was born in VA but we've yet to find any evidence of that nor have we found his parents. He married Maria [We think she's a Thomas but aren't sure]. It seems that the spelling went from Pearce to Pierce at some point but this Hector was faithful to the PEARCE spelling. I also have a Hector T. Pierce, b. 7 Aug 1849 as son of Manderville J. Pierce and Ann Elizabeth Pierce. Pierce is Ann's maiden name, as well, as she is Hector and Maria's daughter. We have yet to determine what, if any, relationship Manderville is to Hector's family. I also have an Oscar F. Pierce, b. ca. 1845, son of David Thomas Pierce and Orphelia Ann Bradfield. David Thomas Pierce, b. ca. 1824, is son of Hector and Maria Pearce. Hector Pearce and David Thomas Pearce/Pierce were blacksmith's. But I don't have any Hector and Oscar that were brothers! Have you found different Hector and/or Oscar Pierce's than the ones listed above? Thanks, Sandy
Exactly, but weren't there several different districts? I'm trying to pin point what area of Loudoun County Johan Hood was located. Was it near Bluemont or Lovettesville, etc.? Thanks, Sandy "P. J. Dennis" wrote: > Loudoun County VA > > >
Does anyone know where the Jonah Hood District would have been located at the time of the 1840 census? Trying to figure out in what region of the county one of my ancestors lived. Thanks, Sandy

Jonah Hood is not a district, but the name of the person who took the information in that particular area.
