    1. Re: [VALOUDOU-L] Re: CHINN/WILSON
    2. Hmm very interesting. First of all why does EVERYONE BUT ME seem to have a copy or has had access to the History of Middleburg and The Chinn Story. Anyway... I obtained this information in my research and happened upon it. If you go to RedFox.com which is the web site to the Red Fox Inn in Middleburg and click on the HISTORY of the Inn circa 1728 it tells how it was originally Chinn's Ordinary which was established by Joseph Chinn from land given to him by his father Rawleigh. Then click down at the bottom and go to Middleburg Online or go to the home page and browse around. In Middleburg Online and the Town History it talks about Joseph selling the land to Levin Powell. I am going to have to go to my library and get a loan on the Chinn Book because everyone who as responded to my inquiries seems to have all gotten their information from the Chinn Book. Now it appears as though my Elizabeth is in there as well. I need to verify that she and John Wilson ACTUALLY married. Someone told me there was nothing in Maryland for a Chinn female. So I'm confused. I will have to write to the court records for information. But there are many places which talks about this. www.middleburgrealestate.com/sub/abtthetown.html talks all about how in 1731 Rawleigh obtained patent on 3300 acres in Northern Neck Proprietary which he passed upon his death to his son Joseph and then goes on about Chinn's Crossroads.

    3. >From "History of Middleburg", page 22 (one of the few pages from this book I have photocopied): "And what of Chinn's Cross Roads, a name that, since 1937, regularly appears in hunt-country literature, and one that I, too, am guuilty of perpetrating. On page eighty-three of Ruth Wilson Dillon's genealogy, "The Chinn Book," she intimates that Elizabeth Chinn gave Chinn's Cross Roads, Virginia, as her place of residence when she married John Wilson in Frederick, Maryland, in 1796. That lead was worth a drive to Frederick, but in the marriage register there was no indication as to where the newlywed were from. A letter to Mrs. Dillon's Cottonport, Louisiana, address was returned - no person by that name in town - and a letter to her publisher also came back; out of business. Whether Mrs. Wilson had some family scrap, or whether, like the rest of us, she just got caught up in the name, remains a question. As to the fabled Chinn's Ordinary, the closest one can come is Alexandria; a Joseph Chen received a tavern license there in 1754." The book "Old Plantations and Historic Homes around Middleburg VA...." by Audrey Windsor Bergner, also dedicates about 17 pages to the Chinn family and their homes, including several pictures. It does not mention Elizabeth Chinn Wilson. Pat Duncan p.duncan@worldnet.att.net

    1. [VALOUDOU-L] Wilson Chinn Info
    2. Looking for ANY information regarding Elizabeth Travers Chinn b. c. 1777 daughter of Rawleigh Chinn and Frances Tarpley. She married John Wilson (supposedly) 8 June 1796 (supposedly Frederick Co. MD) but have yet to find anything in MD. She died 1834 (place unknown) John Wilson died 1821 Middleburg. They had 8 children all born in Middleburg. Her father, Rawleigh Chinn is descended from Rawleigh Chinn (Elizabeth, Rawleigh, Thomas, Rawleigh) who married Esther Ball. This is the Rawleigh Chinn who purchased over 3000 acres of land, and ended up giving over 500 acres to son Joseph (brother of her grandfather Thomas) which land ultimately became Chinn's Crossroads..... eventually becoming Middleburg. With a family this large and dominate in Loudoun Co. I cannot find anything on her and John Wilson. Any help would be appreciated. I have searched every avenue I can think of. Janean Ray

    3. I am looking for any information on JAMES WILSON and MARY BANKHEAD CAMPBELL. He was born in Saltcoats Ayre Scotland in 1741 and died in !799 in VA. He married about 1783 Mary Bankhead Campbell. I think she may have been born in SC, and died in Ohio or LA. Their daughter Mary Bankhead Wilson born 21 Sep 1796 in VA died 19 Cot 1881 in New Orleans LA. Death record shows she was from VA. She married in Cincinnati OH, Daniel Julius Caswell a native of Kent CT. He died in New Orleans in 1839. Other children born to James Wilson and Mary Bankhead Campbell were. James Wilson William Wilson Margarita Elizabeth Wilson died in Cincinnati OH I believe that after the death of James Wilson his wife Mary married a man by the surname of Hartshome and they moved to Ohio. The children would have still be very young at the time of their father's death. Any information would be appreciated. Delores Slidell LA
