    3. I have new clues on my elusive Ambrose family. Laura Ambrose married James Easton, 1 Aug. 1848. I do not find Laura Ambrose Easton in Loudoun County after the 1870 census. I have received information the family lived on Heater's Island prior to 1918 when they moved to Frederick Co. MD. Would Heaters Island be listed in census as Virginia or MD.? Laura's grandson, Harry Nelson Easton and wife, Effie E. Heater Easton are buried in a church cemetery near Lovettsville, VA. Harry died in 1947, Effie in 1994. Are there published cemetery records which could give me location of where they may be buried? I'm sorry, I don't yet have much to go on, this has always been such a helpful list, I am hoping someone can assist me. Thank you in advance. Regards, Mary A. Sutphin [email protected]

    1. YOUR CARTER CONNECTION/LOUDOUN CO.,VA
    2. Dear Henry...that was most interesting learning of your connections, too, to Loudoun Co.,VA where about Friday, May 13th, the painting of one Lord Loudoun was purloined off their library's wall! (I hope by now they have a lead on its whereabouts....that is the last place one would have thought of for a hoist, isn't it?) You mentioned that your BURKE ancestors were slaves at Leesburg and were freed there by ROBERT CARTER III...the son, GEORGE, having inherited the Leo Plantation knowns as "Oatlands", etc. That area, as mentioned in some of my previous e-mail, was the locale of my HARROP/COHAGEN/FAULEY/STONEBURNER and countless other families who migrated to Muskingum, Monroe, Perry and surrounding counties in Ohio. Out of curiosity I thought I would see what there might be on the web re the CARTER family, whom you mentioned.... and came upon a terrifc website. Only speculating, of course, but thought it might very well be (like Pres. Thos.Jefferson?) there were some offspring of this respected family through a beloved slave. You may want to check all of this out on : <http://www.wemba-music.org/scipios, _ carters,_scotts_and_jacksons.htm > I ran off a portion which states that ROSA LEE CARTER is one of the African -American citizens of Loudoun County featured in a book THE ESSENCE OF A PEOPLE: PORTRAITS OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE IN LOUDOUN CO.,VIRGINIA, compiled and published by The Black History Committee of The Friends of the Thomas Balch Library, Leesburg, Virginia. You will note I have copied the Loudoun Co.,VA website ([email protected]) and also the Thomas Balch Library ([email protected]) if you haven't heretofore been in touch with them. Now if you are to contact them don't be too modest, Henry, for you well could be written up yourself in such a book bearing the title "HENRY ROBERT BURKE......" who has not only made a difference in recording and preserving much information in and around Marietta/Northwest Territory, Washington Co.,OH; serving on Ohio's Bicentennial Committee; one of the leaders in preserving the history of The Underground Railroad, etc.,...but also in the lives of all with whom he has come in contact...mine included! Thank you for all your wonderful sharing, good friend! ROSALIE LUCAS HARTINGER Gulfport, Florida

    3. Those who left Northern Virginia for Muskingum Co, OH are always interesting to me. My ancestor, David RUSSELL, left the part of Shenandoah Co, VA (NOW, Warren Co, VA) for Muskingum Co, OH.. then went to Licking Co, OH. He left VA in 1815, with his large family. Known as migrating at the same time were: David RUSSELL + Jane SLATER & 8 Children Joseph Wheeler CROWN + Mary SLATER (Jane's sister) family A Nehemiah SLATER family. [Nehemiah m'd Susanna ATWOOD] I suspect there were others. Our David Russell served in the Ohio Territory in the War of 1812. Several of us think he (and others) saw this land as great opportunity. Certainly, Muskingum County, OH. was a target destination. I am unsure how many left Virginia together each time. These groups appear to have left simultaneously over and over. (Or as a small group?) Later: The Crown family remained in OHIO. The Russells and Nehemiah & William Slater moved to Indiana. By 1830, they were in VERMILLION Co, INDIANA. I am unsure who else made this same venture. Correct or not, I think these same migrations happened over and over. This Slater family came from Charles & Pr George Co, Maryland. They were in northern Virginia for a short time. Are there any others who might have made the same migration pattern? These families seldom migrated alone. I'd love to locate an entire migrating party. 3. My reference is Charles Blair Tavenner Collection Family Records. Catalog of individuals who lived in Loudoun Co. More than 76,000 listed. A small number of people are listed who never lived in Loudoun Co because of their association with Loudoun Co. people or occassionally, ownership of Loudoun Land. I received these papers via a friend but these papers are in the Balch Library. It is stated that it is not necessarily accurate. This is the entry: (John) Leven P (1737-1810) son to 55; m. Sarah Harrison (1739-1812) dau to Burr K. of Staf. Co; formed Midbg; Col. Am. Rev; ShelVestry 1771 Couple things I can't make out but looks like: 505a (sosa) ??? [can't make it out] in 1765 to Kr?, d/ Pa: [farms owned see will] Notes on John/Leven - and sorry can't find right now my source. Moved to Loudoun Co. Va and settled on lands patented by his father. Built his home "The Shades" probably before the Revolutionary War. After the revolution, the General Assembly granted 60,000 acres. In 1787 he gave land for the town of Middleburg. He was Vestryman of Shelburne Parish. He was major on Loudoun County minute men, 1775. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of Grayson's Continental regiment, 1777, and resigned the following year on account of impaired health, caused by exposure at Valley Forge. His brothers William and Peyton also served in the war. He was a member of the first Continental Congress, a friend of George Washington. So is it correct? who knows. My heart was in my throat, she said. Created in 1755, the year before Loudoun came to the colonies, the library's print was a copy of a black and white engraving that dates back to 1749.
