    3. Regarding the recent info on Leven H.Powell of Loudoun Co. Did Leven and Sarah Harrison have two sons Leven?? My Leven H. Powell of Loudoun Co was bo abt. the year 1763 and died abt. 1836 in IL.. He married #2 or # 3 wife Elizabeth Cohagen of Loudoun Co,in Loudoun Co 1807. This is proven on her application for her husbands Rev. pension. The name of her husband was without a doubt Leven H. Powell. The H was for Hayes. There were Russell relationships to this Powell lineage, however I have never been able to verify a Russell wife to my Leven H. Powell. I wish I could find the proven lineage of Leven H. Powell and a previous wife to Elizabeth, because they would be my 4th. grt. grandparents. Any help appreciated. 3. Copies of the Charles Blair Tavenner Collection can be found at the Balch Library. It is a series of handwritten pages (very small writing, often difficult or impossible to read) of genealogical notes. Here is the introduction to the Charles Blair Tavenner Collection, written by Tavenner: This catalog of individuals who have lived in Loudoun County Va is intended to facilitate genealogical and historical investigations. It is the product of over 40 years of intermittent research, yet is by no means complete. More than 75,000 individuals are listed. The guiding principle has been to list all known white adults who lived in the county at some time before 1900. There are many exceptions, however, to this standard. It would exclude persons born after 1900, as those born before 1900 who died before becoming 21 years old, yet many in each category are included, either for convenience or because of uncertainty as to dates of birth or death. Too, a small number of individuals who never lived in Loudoun are listed, chiefly because of their association with Loudoun people, or occasionally, ownership of Loudoun land. Note that no sources are provided for this information and it should only be used as a guide for further research. 3. Please forgive! The various RUSSELL families can be confounding. I so appreciate the hard work and typing my fellow researchers have done. I so wish I had not left no doubt that the Loudoun Russells are surely not mine!! You are so very helpful and share so much, I am realling kicking myself for not making that clear. Regretfully, I sent some of you off in the wrong direction. My David Russell would appear to be related to at least 3 different and probably unrelated Russell lines. He isn't related though. Early on, I tried to connect him to most of these various Russell lines. What I tell you now, is subject to CORRECTION, for I do most from memory. My Russells from old SHEN. Co, then became WARREN CO., VA: 1) Use Given names: JOHN, ROBERT, DAVID, RICHARD, WILLIAM, ELIZABETH, JANE and MARY 'Polly' (Who m'd ELI HOLLINGSWORTH in Indiana.) 2) My David (b.21 Mar 1759) was the son of JOHN Russell (b.abt 1720-1730) & ISABELL (Isabella) Nee? 3) JOHN Russell was the immigrant from IRELAND via England to board ship. (NO proof, family lore) 4) My Russells show no evidence of being Quaker. 5) They appear to travel 'alongside' or live near Quaker groups. LOUDOUN CO, VA Russells: Most were Quaker. Most Russells use the same given names, including MAHLON..which later is used once in our INDIANA RUSSELLS. After looking, I could find no connection to the Loudoun Co. VA MAHLON RUSSELL. Dee Ann Buck told me of the Will of one ROBERT RUSSELL (Loudoun Co, VA) who left legacies to aunts (by name) in IRELAND. I thought there might be a chance to connect, even though the Loudoun Co. Russells were originally Quaker. MY David had a brother ROBERT; but his will was different. The Loudoun Co. Robert from Ireland gave me hope the two families might connect; but a descendant of the Loudoun RUSSELLs tell me they were immigrants from England. So, its possible the Robert Russell of the Will in Loudoun may have been a 'lone' Russell. WINCHESTER VA area Russells, . When I looked at the Quaker monthly minutes and saw David Russell..right generation there, I thought I'd discovered 'gold'. But they were different individuals with differing spouces and children. Those Winchester Russells are children of a RICHARD RUSSELL who (from memory) was first in (?Holland) before migrating on to our shores. It was believed he migrated from England to ?Holland, then to America. (Pennsylvania) At one time, I checked his children, none matched my Russells. I also purchased the book written by Wm. Greenway Russell to check. COL. WILLIAM RUSSELL of the Revolution: There again, David Russell appeared a possible match with those Russells, then in Culpeper Co, VA. However, that David settled in Louisville, KY at the same time our David Russell was in OH and IND. There appears no match there either. Wrong spouces and children for each matching name. I'm sure others will benefit from your Russell data for it is good. Thanks again.. and I am sorry to lead you astray. Shirley S.

    2. Shirley, Looking at early RUSSELLs this JAMES RUSSELL and WILLIAM RUSSELL are located in your RUSSELL family area. Could this JAMES RUSSELL be the brother of DAVID RUSSELL and the son of RICHARD RUSSELL the dececendents of WILLIAM GREENWAY RUSSELL of Winchester? RICHARD RUSSELL, it was stated, had 7 sons. Could the following WILLIAM RUSSELL be one them? "Virginia Valley Records" by John W. Wayland Page 105 "Capt. (Deed Book 14, page 29 et seq., Staunton, VA) This was the land now owned by the heirs of Dr. E. H HERRING, on Mill Creek. As shown elsewhere in these sketches, the 5000 acres granted really contained 6600 and the survey in RUSSELL vs FRANCISCO show that WILLIAM RUSSELL, Sr., received 1600 acres of STOVER'S upper grant. 1. Re: [VALOUDOU-L] RUSSELL/COHAGEN/SWINGLE CONNECTION/LOUDOUN CO.,VA.
    2. Shirley, DAVID seems to be a family RUSSELL name in the William Greenway Russell's family. With the naming patterns which honor grandparents, parents, and favorite siblings your DAVID RUSSELL could belong to this RUSSELL family in some way. WILLIAM GREENWAY RUSSELL was born 5 October 1800 and was engaged in the mercantile business before the Civil War. He was a Quaker and held many City of Winchester public offices over his lifetime. WILLIAM GREENWAY RUSSELL died 31 January 1891 and is buried at Mt. Hebron. For your files, the following information on his family: "What I Know About Winchester" by William Greenway RUSSELL Page 7 "The Author" The RUSSELL family was of English origin, but the progenitor of the American branch had emigrated to Holland in 1688. From thence in 1732 RICHARD RUSSELL came to America and settled in Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. Of the seven sons of RICHARD RUSSELL, two (DAVID & JAMES) later came to Winchester. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------The children of DAVID RUSSELL and HANNAH GREENWAY were: JESSE D. RUSSELL, who moved to Missouri in 1811; HETTIE and ELIZABETH RUSSELL, both died in childhood; JOHN RUSSELL, who moved to St. Louis in 1814, but returned to Winchester and died here in 1832; ISAAC RUSSELL, born in 1795, a soldier in the War of 1812, and a merchant in Winchester, who died in 1857; and WILLIAM GREENWAY RUSSELL, the author of these memoirs. Page 56 "South Loudoun Street" Adjoining on the north was a vacant lot,---------. --------------and was bought about 1817 by DAVID RUSSELL, who erected on it a neat dwelling, and at present the residence of ISAAC W. DAVID RUSSELL, Sr., had five sons: JESSE D., JOHNS., ISAAC, DAVID, and WILLIAM G. He had also four daughters: HETTY, ELIZABETH, woh died in infancy, MARY A. who married ROBERT SMITH and HARRIET who now occupies the house; the family are all dead but WILLIAM G. and HARRIET. 1. RUSSELL/COHAGEN/SWINGLE CONNECTION/LOUDOUN CO.,VA.
    2. Good to hear from you, Shirley, regarding the RUSSELLs who also moved from Loudoun Co.,VA to Muskingum Co.,OH. While it would require more research to connect the dots directly to your DAVID RUSSELL, quite likely yours too will go back to MAHLON RUSSELL, b. 1793 Loudoun Co., VA, d. 25 Nov. 1855, Brush Creek, Muskingum Co.,OH (area they dubbed "Virginia Ridge"...bur. Nov. 1855 there in Cemetery of that name). He was possibly the s/o a ROBERT?, SAMUEL? or THOMAS RUSSELL,SR? He mar. MARY?? ABT 1819 in Loudoun Co., VA. She was born 4 Jan 1790 in same county, and d. 30 May 1876 and is bur.Virginia Ridge Cemetery, Brush Creek Cem., Muskingum Co., OH. MAHLON & MARY RUSSELL, had a son, JAMES H. Have more data on my COHAGENs and allied SWINGLE family, but that's about all I can help you with at present with regard to your RUSSELL line. Would appreciate any more data you might have (or learn) regarding the latter family,. and if you feel I might be of further help in any way just let me know. Rosalie Lucas Hartinger [email protected] I notice you have "tampa bay" in your e-mail address...do you live anywhere near the St.Pete/Gulfport area? I live in the latter, which abuts St.Petersburg directly to the south.
