One of Americas founding fathers is subject of DNA dig The first ever excavation to retrieve DNA from remains in a British church for a scientific project began in June. Archaeologists from Suffolk and the United States had been working carefully to recover a small fragment of the skeleton of Elizabeth Gosnold Tilney, the sister of Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, the Suffolk entrepreneur who led the expedition to establish the first English-speaking colony in the New World and the birthplace of the United States of America. The Grave Shaft of Elizabeth Gosnold Tilney, Bartholomew Gosnold's Sister In 1607, Gosnolds group landed at Jamestown, in what is now Virginia, but died a few months later. He is considered the most overlooked of U.S. founders. The remains of a 17th century captain were uncovered in 2003 by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation) on Jamestown Island. Backed by the National Geographic Society, the project at Shelley church aims to prove that the captain in Virginia is the USAs Founding Father. Dr William Kelso, the Director of Archaeology for APVA Preservation, has joined a team of archaeologists from Suffolk County Council at Shelley for the dig. A second excavation to recover a DNA sample from Katherine Blackerby, Gosnolds niece who is buried at St Peter and St Mary church in Stowmarket, will also begin shortly. The results of any DNA comparison will be the centerpiece of an episode of Explorer on the National Geographics TV channel later in the year. Yes, Agnes, I have seen the Remax home, and visited it a few years ago right after my parents died. Daddy had told me that Dr. had that house built. The entrance on the left side was for his office, and the entrance on the right was the residence. That was NOT the home where Mary Towner Jones gave birth and died, though. That home was near the "five corners" road, and was across the street from a church and a cemetery, according to Aurelia McCormick Jewell, our cousin (married to Walter Towner Jewell, son of Mary's sister, Edith Towner). I think a Baptist church, the Goodhope Baptist Church may have been nearby as well. I need to get out that way and explore around. Dr's second wife, by the way, Minnie Francis (her mother's maiden name) JOHNSTON, was from Evergreen Mills. Her father, James Johnston, was the miller of Evergreen Mills. We used to go by their old home on our many Sunday rides in the country when I was a child. Don't know if it is still standing, though. Thanks! Patti
Patti, Checked with one of my sources this am, she's in her 90's but remembers that the house two doors down from her was known as the ' Dr, Jones house'. Will go by this week to get a picture and you can compare it to yours. it's in Ashburn, which is just a few miles from Ryan. Its a realtors office now, Remax , I believe, but it's still standing! You can also check www.ashburnweb.com, for more info. Agnes
Patti, Sorry, I just got to this, out most of the day. I mentioned Hillside Elementary which you can find at www.loudoun.k12.va.us/schools/hillside and a housing development known as Broadlands, www.broadlands.org. I know several people who might be familiar with this house and will inquire tomorrow. If it is possible to send me this picture, I might be able to help. Hope this will help. Agnes
My great grandfather, Dr. James Tasker Jones, first practiced medicine in Ryan, VA, where my grandfather, Towner Francis Jones, was born in 1897. I believe he house was located near the old 5 Corners Road, but I suspect it has since been torn down. Would Agnes Readmond know the exact names of the websites to which you refer in your recent email? I thought I might be able to take a look. I have an old photo of the home, but no address!! Also, does anyone know of any websites specializing in the Northern Neck area? Dr. Jones' father, Lindsey M. Jones, was born there, and I am hitting that "brick wall" trying to trace his lineage back at this time. Thanks, Patti Jones Schacht
James Caylor's parents are Jacob Caylor b. 25 Dec. 1775 in Va, d. 11 June 1848 in Fayette Co., OH and Catherine Etcher b.06 April 1781 in Va., m. between 1801 and 1803, d 28 Jan.1850 in Fayette Co., OH. Info found at www.Robertstoy.com , where a complete genealogy can be found under "Families". I believe that James is the builder of "Hillside", a home (still standing in Broadlands housing development) in the former Ryan/ Waxpool area of Loudoun Co. Info on this can be found at the Loudoun Co. Schools/ Hillside Elementary web site and possibly the 'Broadlands' website. Hope this helps! Agnes

The members of this group are some of the greatest helpers in America! I try to do my own research, but occasionally feel that I need to ask for help. I'll respond in the order in which I received replies. Susan, Thank you, but no, I do not need the census listings...have gotten a bunch through Heritage Quest through my library: Hamontree, Hameltree, Hamondtree, Hammondtree, Hamantree, Mannontree, and wonder how many other ways I can find them. I truly appreciate everything you sent. Niceta, Thank you for checking in what I gather is a book on the Marriages of Cumberland Co. I live very near there so might just wander over there one day...about an hour's drive. Marty, As usual you are very helpful as well. I had not looked into Maryland at all, but will now do so. Thank you! Debbie, Thank you. At this time I would be interested in any Hammontree (any spelling) marriages prior to 1860. Is it possible for you to copy and paste them easily to an email? Or would you even have time? I am so thankful for any info I get on this family. From a very grateful gal, I wish you all good health and happiness. E W Wallace (maybe VAFAUQUI list?) had on her email the other day: "Genealogy without documentation is MYTHOLOGY"
There are alot of John Hammontrees listed from all states and all years. These are the only ones in Va. at that time. Virginia Marriages John M. Hammontree married Sarah A. E. My condolences to you in your loss. I lost my mother in April, and the estate business is driving me up a wall. I hope your paperwork is easier, being a spouse. We certainly do miss those we love, but know they are hopefully in a better place. my spouse has been through this four times since we've been married ( Father, uncle, sister, and Mother) but he never had me involved. Now the burden is on my shoulders. Keep the good memories and talk about your husband and he will stay with you forever.
