Can someone please tell me if NeareVille is the correct name for the post office listed on the 1860 census in Loudoun Co, VA? It is on page 167, October 5, 1860, Henry G Smith is the Ass't Marshal. Thanks in advance for any help. Does anyone have a web-site link they could share where you could learn the nationality of various surnames? Where you could learn the origin and meaning of a surname, and what country the name may have come from? Thank you. Fran

I believe they have the IGI online. I believe you select an area, like North America, and then plug in the surname. You will then get many listings of individuals with (?soundex) variations of the surname. The entries are for baptismal and marriage events of the individuals. Valerie

Hi, Try for soundex: http://www.kindredkonnections.com/cgi-bin/sndxnams?-1+0+queryForm+English Soundex doesn't always work. For example, my "Scipio" surname is also spelled Cippio in records - which soundex doesn't catch. Bob McArtor or anyone with information....Have you found the McArtor family also spelled Mc Carter and would they have a Bernards Township Somerset County New Jersey and/or Seneca County New York connection ?.......I actually am researching a family named Rightmire and looking for a James, John (or possibly Robert Rightmire) who are in (Pat Duncan and Marty Hiatt information and help) Loudoun County in the late 1700's until about 1800...An Isaac Van Tuyl married Mary McCarter Nov 14 1758 probably Somerset Co NJ) and one of their daughters (Mary Van Tuyl) married an unknown Rightmire before 1764 (some sources day his first name was James.) I am trying to place this Rightmire family with the Loudoun County Va connection to Rightmire families in New Jersey and the Seneca County area of New York where some of the Van Tuyl children apparently settled...Other children of the McCarters married into the Sebring, Auten, Grant, Goltry, Compton, Jobs families..any Loudoun Co connections or anything familiar?? ...Thanks for any help...Alice ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janean Ray" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 8:38 AM Subject: [VALOUDOU-L] McCarty >I have many McCarty's as they relate to the Ball, Payne, Tarpley, Chinn > lines. Why don't you check the personal property taxes to see what adult men with the surname Wise lived here (Loudoun) in 1793-95? And with two women named Mary A. I'd look very closely at their ages. Was there an extreme difference? Can you prove they were married to different men at the same time? If it's just a slight difference in age, Mary A. and Mary Alice might be one in the same. When Travis sold land, did a wife release her dower interest? If not, she may have predeceased him. Does anyone know of a website out there that you can plug a Surname into and it will come back with other spellings for the Surname? Very anxious to be able to trace MARY McILHENY's genealogy. If she was the "Mary X" who married JONATHAN McARTOR, it is estimated she was born about 1759 possibly in Pennsylvania. Our Mary had 9 children, 2 born in Pennsylvania and 7 in Loudoun County. Her first child was born in 1778. We estimate she died before 1828. Does ANY McIlhany family researcher have a genealogy, will, or other document that might mention a Mary who could fit this description? Thanks. Bob McArtor
