1. "The American Dictionary of the English Language": Many definitions of the word "natural" including (10) "Illegitimate. Said of offspring." I've found this true in at least one old will. 2. "Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary": "3a (1) begotten as distinguished from adopted; also: LEGITIMATE (2) being a relation by actual consanguinity as distinguished from adoption<~parents> b illegitimate<a~child>." If they used the term "natural child" in a document or a will what was the meaning, if the child was not the child of the person making the will [ not father ] but, the child of his wife ???. Thank you for any help, Sondra
From http://www.genealogyforum.com/gfaol/beginners/trends.htm Natural child - when the term "natural" is used the researcher should not jump to a conclusion that it denotes an illegitimate relationship. It is meant to indicate a relationship by blood rather than one by marriage or adoption. An illegitimate child may be called "my base son" or "my bastard son." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pat Duncan [email protected]
Pat, As usual, thanks for your prompt reply. I think that old note must have been wrong to begin with and later on we found that John J. Templer estate settlement with your help and I have copies of it. He is one of the few Templer children to remain in Virginia along with Esther Templer Trammell. My guess is something got scrambled in that old note with the William Thatcher you listed just above the John Templer estate. Probably just did not recognize the change in references when it was written down. The Thomas Templer and son, Stacy you listed are my 3rd and 2nd great grandfathers. In 1835, while on their way through Ohio, Stacy married in Knox County and then both couples are in Coles County, IL, in 1840. So they obviously left shortly after the 1834 list was rendered. Thanks, Charlie Templer
A question for anyone on the list: I have an old note in my files that indicates a Thomas Templer and some Templer children were mentioned in a William Thatcher will in 1831 in Loudoun County, VA. I have no knowledge of where this note even comes from other than a reference to Court Order and Minute Books 1757 - Present. We know from early census data that Thomas Templer had more than one child but have yet to figure out who any of the others are. Perhaps this is a clue? Does anyone know of such a will in 1831 or what it might say? Thanks, Charlie Templer _www.geocities.com/templerfamily_ (http://www.geocities.com/templerfamily)
