It is true, smgf.org does offer free DNA tests, however, they only test a limited number of markers, 17, I think, and you could wait a very long time before you see your results on the website. It usually takes 8-12 weeks to recieve test results, I know of some people who have waited 18 months to 2 years to see their results on the smgf website. SMGF has its own research objective, and that might not correspond with what you want to know by being tested. 17 markers is not a sufficient number to prove relationships. I manage 6 DNA projects, at a company which will remain nameless. They offer 12, 25, 37 and 67 markers. In my projects, most of the mutations, which either prove or disprove relationships, have come between markers 26 and 37. You can match on 12, 17, and 25 markers, and still not be related, especially if you are in a haplogroup that covers a wide swath of the population. Even if you match on the markers, you cannot be related, if you are in different haplogroups. If I used words with which you are not familiar, check them in wikipedia. wikipedia will give you a much better explanation than I can. Please do not construe my comments to be negative about SMGF. They are doing what they set out to do very well, it just might not be what you are looking for. Also be aware that all testing companies are not equal, each tests a different number of markers, the information they provide to help you understand your test results is different and the way they report test results is different. The old rule of you get what you pay for certainly needs to be condidered with DNA testing. Marleen Van Horne
Hello, If you do go forward with the DNA Testing, be careful with the overseas results. Depending on how long ago you are looking and in what country, there are several who used a different naming system. Wales and Sweden used the fathers first name as the last name of Children. In Sweden for example, The son of Swen Johnson, would be given whatever first name the family wanted (As has always been) but the last name would become Swenson. If his name was Iver, his children would become Iverson. The Welsh just did the first name. Johns children would be of John or ap John and then later on the "ap" was lost in some families. The French often used peoples careers as their name. A cook would be Mr. or Mrs. Cook, or Baker. And the Scots used Clans and there were times that there was no blood relationship at all. Because the Clans would often trade children in order to gain talent and that traded person became a beloved member of the family. Wales is talking about a Welsh DNA. If all the countries did this along with the surname, that would be great! Hi, I tested my mtDNA at Family Tree DNA based in Houston. SMGF may give free testing but the results might not show up for a long time. I am on a genealogy DNA mailing list and those who have gone with SMGF have not received their results for sometimes as long as two years. If you test DNA male or female you really need to check out the DNA companies before you proceed. With Family Tree DNA I received my full results in 5 weeks but it did cost me as most testing is not free. I was quick to jump to this site and view the "catch". It seems legitimate, but from what I've read, we do not get the results back. Kind of a "bummer". Thanks for the info! This couple is one of my brick walls. I am sure my Thomas Edwards, my ggggrandfather fits into their family somewhere. They settled in Washington and Sullivan Cos., Tn. after the 1780s. Abel dying there about 1830. There is a land sale listing their children, but I wondered if there were older children as we do not have a correct marriage date for them. The children listed in the land sale our in order of oldest to youngest, John, who was born in 1772, Thomas, Nancy, Owen, Joshua, Abel, Arthur. Now there is one name missing from this group that appears over and over in the Edwards family and that is Samuel. The one date I have for Abel and Mary marriage is 27 June, 1764. Now if that is true you don't wait 12 years to start having kids. So I am looking for a Samuel Edwards because my Thomas named his only son Samuel. Whoops just realized this is not the first Sunday of the month. Janice Enk

I assume you mean Fairfax Co., not Fairfield Co. No mention of the name in the Fairfax Deed Abstracts by the Sparacios from 1742-1760. Christian Ruse does not appear on the Loudoun Tithables up to 1781, but does appear on the Loudoun Personal Property Tax Lists beginning in 1782. In 1793 he was assigned a lease for 150 acres of land. Dear Pat Duncan, I was wondering if you would mind looking up a land transaction for me in your book, "Deed Abstracts of Fairfax Co, Va. 1742-1750". I have an ancestor,Valentine Holyfieled who obtained a land grant of 342 acres in March of 1729 in what what then Stafford County. By 1746 or 1747, I have been told that two relatives Daniel & I think Gideon Holyfield sold his land in 1746 or 1747,which I presume means he had passed away. Is this land transaction listed in your book? Dear List, Thomas Hall of Loudoun (then Fairfax) sold land to Andrew Hutchison of Loudoun (then Fairfax) sometime prior to 1758, probably around 1746. I would like to know how many acres Hall sold to Hutchison. The reference is from Andrew Hutchison's will (1758) in which he gave son Benjamin a gift of land "bought from Thomas Hall." Sincerly, Marilyn Schmidt miwi6@netzero.net
Can someone provide more information on this Thomas Hall & family ? Just a hint, I would also post this on the Talbott surname list as that name marries into the Oden family in Maryland. -----Original Message----- From: valoudou-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:valoudou-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marleen Van Horne Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2007 11:22 PM To: VALOUDOU Subject: [VALOUDOU] Oden yDNA Project 2007 Report The Oden yDNA Project is almost two years old. There are seven members, two of who descend from Solomon Oden of Williamson County, Tennessee and five who are believed to descend from Thomas Oden of Charles County, Maryland. Family Tree DNA, where the project testing is done, have make available six gift certificates for the holiday season, four for yDNA testing and two for mtDNA testing. For yDNA testing, you MUST be a male, directly descended in the male line from the earliest know ancestor with your surname. If your line of descent has been interrupted by an adoption, or a female ancestor the your yDNA will not match your earliest know ancestor For mtDNA test, both men and women can find information on their ancestors. mtDNA passes from a mother to all of her children, both sons and daughters, however, only the daughters pass it on to their children, it dead ends in the sons. Whether the person tested is male or female, they will find out about the genetic history of their maternal ancestors. The Oden yDNA Project has a specific need for men with the Oden surname whose Oden ancestors originate in Charles County, and Frederick County, Maryland and in Beaufort County, North Carolina. In Charles County, we are looking for descendants of Francis Oden, who died there in 1726. Francis had five sons, Francis, Pembroke, David, Lewis and Thomas. Francis Oden the younger died in 1772, leaving sons Jonathan, Elias, Vincent and Michael, David Oden lived in Frederick County. We believe there are still Oden descendants living in the county. One descendant of this Oden family was Thomas Oden who lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky and Warren County, Missouri. We believe there are still Oden descendants in both counties. In the case of Beaufort County, North Carolina, we are looking for descendant of Richard Odeon / Oden. Richard acquired land in Beaufort County, beginning in 1700. He died there in 1708, naming sons William, Richard, John, Atta and Charles. William Oden was given land in Virginia, believd to be Lower Norfolk County. The Oden yDNA Project is particularly interested in having one or more men from they two families join the project. The project is open to all men with the ODEN surname. The gift certificates will be awarded on a first come first serve basis. William T. I am looking for family, especially parents, of Snowdon Scott. I believe he was born on Dec. 3, 1821 in Louden, Virginia and died on May 2, 1901, in Seymoursville, West Virginia. He married Elizabeth Bovey on January 10, 1855 in Mt. Hebron, Hardy Virginia. He was the father of my grandfather, Floyd Clyde Scott, but I know nothing more about him. It is possible that his father was Moses and Moses may have died around 1842 in some sort of mill accident. Snowdon's mother may have been Harriet. I cannot find any of his ancestors "for sure" and don't know where to look next. I am new to genealogy searches and don't know where to look next. Thank you!
