Good Afternoon, I am tring to find a Will. I understand that there is a Book with Virginia Wills. Is there anyuone who posses such a Book? Or is it only available at the libraries? The Will I am looking for is for Nicholas Phillips (or Philips) He died in 1786 Virginia. He had children that were born in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Peter born 1768 and John Nicholas born 1775. I live in California and can't get to Virginia to look at the Libraries there. If anyone can help, I would be most grateful. Thank you, Barbara Ann Phillips bphil1@earthlink.net

One of the useful features of DNA testing is that it can tell you what lines you are NOT related to and sometimes what countries your family DIDN'T originate from (or at least give you the percentages). This is pretty important if you have a couple of name coincidences and research problems to deal with (or a very common surname).? You then know where you don't have to bother to research anymore. -----Original Message----- From: G. Lee Hearl <glh@naxs.com> years.. as only those three bear my surname... Note: After having tested over 90 participants in the Harrell DNA Project, I have determined that the 25 marker test is sufficient to start with, as it gives a very good indication as to which lines one is related to.. This test can be extended to 37 or 67 markers at a later date, if desired.. I do not recommend the 12 marker test because the results will have too many matches to make a separation of lines.. A participant in a family tree surname project can access a webpage which compares his markers with everyone in the project and gives the genetic distance from all the others.. The distance in the Harrell Project varies from "0" to a high of about "30". "0" meaning there is a close relationship and "30" indicating very little kinship.. We have about 25 participants who have "0" genetic distance and all of these people had traced their families through research to S.E. Va./ E. NC before DNA testing was introduced.. DNA testing of 25 markers has helped prove their research is sound..GLH > Marleen Van Horen wrote in part: If on the other hand, you are only talking about 12 or 25 markers, I would not waste my time, the possibility of relationship is meaningless. For anyone who needs more info on DNA testing, On DNA testing (male or female) your results on HVR1 and HVR2 will not compromise your insurance or employment. FULL testing where the coding region markers are is what you can receive in full testing . The coding region markers should be kept private until they are checked out to show there are no medical issues with them. I have done full genome sequence testing known as FGS. That means I have HVR1 and HVR2 results plus 9 coding region markers or mutations. I have posted my HVR1 and HVR2 markers as it is safe to do so. I do not post the coding region markers. If you don't post or give the coding region mutations or markers you are safe from anything concerning insurance or employment problems. The coding region markers will put you in a haplogroup which will help you find matches and help know the origins of countries you may descend from. DNA testing consists of a kit where you swab the inside of the cheeks of your mouth. There is no blood involved. They used to test that way but no longer. The cheek swabs will have your DNA on it and you send it to the company you are testing with and they will send it to the lab and in a few weeks you will be notified of your results and you should receive a certificate with them from the company. As long as you don't give out the coding region markers in FULL testing you have absolutely nothing to worry about on insurance or medical issues. I hope this helps. Marianne Dillow
To Further Explain DNA Testing: Family Tree Labs explains to those who find matches which are not of the same surname that such matches do not indicate a recent relationship to those persons, only a common ancestor in the distant past before surnames came into use.. I have found over 300 matches to my test results but can only consider three as possible relationships within the past 500 or less years.. as only those three bear my surname... DNA will give you a hint as to where your ancestors may have come from; England, Scotland, Ireland, France etc.. My surname "Harrald" "Herrell" "Harrell" etc. has been in use for over a thousand years but DNA does not prove which line I may be connected to in earlier times.. GLH G. So - what they are doing then, is gathering DNA for their own projects and letting you search their base to find something you might be able to use. That is not a good thing. I am glad you all found this out.
Here is what I found at the SMGF web site under FAQ's 4. _Will I receive my DNA results from SMGF?_ (http://www.smgf.org/faqs.jspx#) Due to the nature of our project, you will not receive your DNA results directly back from SMGF. However, your results and genealogy will be added to the Sorenson database, and you can find them by searching for your surname and looking at related family trees. I think the question that needs to be asked is how many markers are you comparing and in what haplogroup. 300 matches seems like an awful lot to me, if you are comparing 37 or 67 markers, which would give you some kind of realistic relationship information. If on the other hand, you are only talking about 12 or 25 markers, I would not waste my time, the possibility of relationship is meaningless. Marleen Van Horne
Well what is the sense of taking it if they won't give you the results. That does not make sense does it. Gee our ancestor, Thomas Sealock appeared around 1750 or so and said he was an orphan. He took the name Sealock and we don't know why. We were hoping that maybe a Sealock male could take the test to compare with surnames from overseas to see if we could get a match. But if they won't give you the results, what will they do with them, and why should you take one.
Hi Marge, I am not putting SMFG down. What I meant to say is they do research. Other companies where you pay for testing gives you your results right away and access to matches. This is what you pay for as any other product you purchase. SMFG does research. They have started sharing their research with GeneTree. Marianne Dillow We will have to think about doing it for free now.
Hi Marleen, I was trying to point out the difference in companies too and before people expect certain things from DNA companies they really should do some research on the companies before they commit theirself to testing. What is always free might not be exactly what a person is really seeking. Your remarks are a better explanation than mine. :) Marianne Dillow Marleen Van Horne <msvnhrn@jps.net> wrote: It is true, smgf.org does offer free DNA tests, however, they only test a limited number of markers, 17, I think, and you could wait a very long time before you see your results on the website. It usually takes 8-12 weeks to recieve test results, I know of some people who have waited 18 months to 2 years to see their results on the smgf website. SMGF has its own research objective, and that might not correspond with what you want to know by being tested. 17 markers is not a sufficient number to prove relationships. I manage 6 DNA projects, at a company which will remain nameless. They offer 12, 25, 37 and 67 markers. In my projects, most of the mutations, which either prove or disprove relationships, have come between markers 26 and 37. You can match on 12, 17, and 25 markers, and still not be related, especially if you are in a haplogroup that covers a wide swath of the population. Even if you match on the markers, you cannot be related, if you are in different haplogroups. If I used words with which you are not familiar, check them in wikipedia. wikipedia will give you a much better explanation than I can. Please do not construe my comments to be negative about SMGF. They are doing what they set out to do very well, it just might not be what you are looking for. Also be aware that all testing companies are not equal, each tests a different number of markers, the information they provide to help you understand your test results is different and the way they report test results is different. The old rule of you get what you pay for certainly needs to be condidered with DNA testing. Marleen Van Horne
