For years our family researchers thought our grgrgrandma REBECCA JANE VANHUSS's maiden name was COLE. It was MINTON. In Death Records of Lee Co December 31, 1865 page 28 line 41..It has VANHUSS, JOHN M January Camp Chase Pneumonia 32 yrs 6 mos. It finished on page 29 as...line 41 MITCHELL (Michael) & ELIZ VANHUSS blank farmer Husband (informant>>>A J COLE (head of the family)wife. After years of searching someone noticed on the actual book that a line was skipped and caused all the confusion. It should have read.... VANHUSS, JOHN M January Camp Chase Pneumonia 32 yrs 6 mos. Milly makes a good point. If something doesn't make sense with your family, or you are having trouble tracing an ancestor, consider the possibility that one piece of information might be in error and try to check the original records. Something similar to what Millie describes also happened with my family. My gggg grandfather Joseph BISHOP was listed with two different second wives. When I visited the Smyth County VA courthouse last fall and looked at the original entries, I found that a transcriber had inadvertently skipped a line and attached the wrong bride's name to my gggg grandfather. I GREATLY admire, and appreciate, the work that so may people have done in transcribing original records and making them available to family researchers like me. Without their work, I would be nowhere with my own research! But they do make mistakes, so we should all be careful about accepting everything that we see in books and on the web.
