HI List: Well, the years have come and gone and I am still no closer to finding the surname for my ggg-grandmother, Rachel Unknown w/o J. Campbell Johnston/Johnson. I have decided to try to track down the death dates and places of each of their children and start to order death records in the hope of finding a surname listed somewhere. It seems that the youngest ones would have the greatest possibility of having an actual death record with all the info listed so have decided to start with them first. J. Campbell Johnston b. 1819 Washington Co., VA and Rachel b. 1822 VA were probably married in Smyth Co., VA about 1837/8. No marriage record has been found or I wouldn't be writing this. :-) Their first three children b. Smyth. Moved to Scott Co., VA abt. 1846. Their next 13 or 14 children being born there. J. Campbell Johnston/Johnson dies in Lee Co., VA in 1885. Several of their younger children married in Lee Co. Have not been able to find a death record in Lee Co. for Rachel. The last record I have for Rachel is in the 1880 Lee Co. census in the home of Cam Jonston. Those children still living at home in the 1880 Lee Co. census are Eliza (may be Elizabeth Margaret), Squire, Walter, Nancy and Thomas. I found a marriage record for Nancy E. Johnson m. Franklin Sproles on 24 Dec 1899. Is this Nancy the d/o J. Campbell and Rachel Johnston/Johnson? She must have married late, if it is her. Are there any other marriage records for these children? Did Rachel possibly marry again? Corinne
