On 1860 Hancock co TN census, my ancestor Andrew MARTIN is > listed as living in Mulberry Gap District, Mulberry Gap Post Office. His profession > is listed as "grocery" so there must have been a store in the area?? Close > by is Lewis THOMPSON age 47, profession "tailoring" Ok, I got curious and searched Mulberry Gap District, Hancock Co TN 1860 census for occupations other than farming and housekeeping to get an idea of what was going on in the area at the time. This is what I found: Spinning ... 5 persons Weaving ..... 3 persons Carpenter/cabinet work . 5 persons Tanning........ 1 person Miller .... 1 person Surveyor ... 1 person School mistress ...1 person B.P. Clergyman ... 1 person (Primitive Baptist???) Tailoring ... 1 person Merchant ... 1 person (Jackson Quillen age 34) and very close to him "my" Andrew MARTIN .."grocery" Not sure if Andrew Martin had his own grocery store or if Jackson Quillen owned a store and Andrew was a "grocery clerk" in it.
