Hi All, Just a quick note. I have been trying off and on for several years to get the families who own the copyrights to the 2 vols of "Early Settlers Of Lee County Virginia" to allow them to be reprinted. They always replyed with a no. The families own the copyright for 75 years from the death of the authors and do not have to allow them to be reprinted. I am very pleased to hear that the Lee County Genealogical Society has finally gotten permission to have these wonderful books reprinted. I realize there are a number of errors in them, but as one person said "an Early Settlers book with errors is better than NO book." For those who have never seen these books, like many genealogy books they were compiled from information that was sent to the authors and were done long before computers, and word processing programs (which make editing so much easier) were around. There are over 1,300 pages. Can you imagine trying to verify all that info without a computer? A monumental task in the least. The reason I am writing this is I have been reading many complaints being voiced over and over wanting the reprints to be corrected. First off, when a book is reprinted, you can not alter the ORIGINAL WORK. It belongs to the authors. Even their descendants can not alter the books. The only way a corrected copy could be done is to write totally NEW books. The suggestion that someone set up a site where corrected information could be submitted is an excellent idea, though an extremly large task to undertake. Maybe if that was done someone could have an addenum printed in the future. An index would be nice, but who's going to go through 1,300 pages and put one together? Even it would have to be printed separated from the original books. Well, enough of my ramblings. I know I will be in line to get a reprinted copy when they are released. I will donate my time and money to pay for a dedicated web site for corrections to the Early Settlers of Lee County, Va. books. Let's have the books reprinted as is and appreciate the books for what they are and why they were originally written. Again, I am offering to pay for a dedicated web site including the fees for the domain name for five years for all corrections that need to be added to the books. I will donate my time to code and upload the information. I am like a child on the outside of the new candy store in town on opening day. Waiting for the doors to fling open so I can purchase the most wonderful and wanted item in the neighborhood. Let the corrections be sent to the Lee County Historical Society and let them forward the information so that the senders address can be kept private. We have a few months to work out the details on how the corrections will be listed. For all that are this list, please know that my offer stands as good as my name. Anyone else willing to take on the job of coding and uploading the information? Sheryl Young Barnes Newark, Ohio sunnjammers@alltel.net (you may have to retype sunnjammers@alltel.net in the "TO" box)
Allright, Carol. I'll be in line too!! That's great news.....Wanda Braydic@aol.com wrote: > Hi All, > Just a quick note.
