I believe relationship listed on the census forms refers to head of household. when my great-grandfather listed my grandfather in the house hold after his 2nd marriage, all the children were listed as sons and daughters even though the first 3 were by his first marriage (the great-grandmother died and he remarried and had children by his 2nd wife). this could be quite misleading to future generations because they would think the 2nd wife was mother to all the children.
