Hello All: One of my main interests is the influence the coal mining industry has had on the families of Lee and Wise counties. I am interested in trying to research the various coal companies and corporations that existed in the counties in the early to mid 1900s. I know that genealogy lists are not normally the place to look for these types of information, but I am really looking to see how mining influenced family life during the mining heydays. If you can relate how mining influenced family life, please feel free to contact me off-list. I would greatly appreciate any help. I have come across some mine names and locations that I am unfamiliar with. Perhaps someone on the lists can help. I would like to know about the Bondurant Coal and Coke Co in Boundurantville, VA (Lee County), Leona Mines, King Cole Mining Corp (Pennington Gap), and Briar Ridge Coal Corporation (St. Charles). In Wise County, I would like information on Blackwood Fuel Company (Blackwood), ANY Virginia Iron Coal and Coke Company mines, Little Tom Coal Co (Norton), Blue Diamond Coal Company (Tom's Creek), and Yellow Creek Coal and Coke Company (Wise). As a POST-SCRIPT (P.S.) My grandfather was a miner at Inman in Wise county, as was his brother. My grandfather was severely injured in a mining accident at the mine somewhere around 1936. He was left with a permanent limp resulting from one leg being slightly longer than the other after all the medical treatment for the mining accident injuries. I have no other details other than those. Does anybody have knowledge of any mining accidents that may have happened during that time period? I have searched most of the local newspapers for any reference and cannot locate any information. I'd love to solve this family mystery. Sincerely, Wayne Duncan
Wayne, perhaps you could call an elderly gentleman, Paul Bobrosky, who lives in Keokee (Lee Co) VA. Sorry, I do not have his phone #, but he is quite helpful to others. I think he has a collection of coal-mining artifacts. By the way, I can't help you with your mining questions, but "Leona" was a common mining name in the 40's & 50's.
