The first marriage book is missing and before 1850 only 1830-36 are extant. Also, just as with Harlan, even when the books are available lots of early marriages never got recorded. The people just wouldn't travel to the county seat for a license and the ministers often didn't record them either. You will have to try to prove the marriage by land or estate records if the woman was an heiress after getting married. So I would suggest checking for same for the Upton and (E)step families.
