Joseph wasn't born until 1775. Joseph Ely's father, Thomas Ely was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He was born about 1728 and died at Montgomery County, VA in 1782. He was married to Jane Smith about 1751. Jane was born about 1733 at Dublin, Ireland and died at Lee County, VA on October 1, 1796. I also descend from Joseph Ely and Fanny Hix through their daughter Mary Ely and William Smith. Thomas resided during the American Revolution at Bedford County, Virginia and assisted in establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of Private (Virginia). Thomas served as a Private in the 5th Virginia Regiment Continental Line under various Captains under command of Col. Josiah Parker and Col. Abraham Beauford. From the office of Lutz Wahl, Brigadier General, Acting as Adjutant General, a memorandum states, "The records of this office show that one Thomas Ealy, name also borne as Thomas Ely (Eley), served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Captain Henry Terrell's Company, also designated Captain Samuel Colston's & Captain Josiah Parker. Enlisted 10 March 1777 to serve until 8 March 1778 and was discharged 15 March 1778. Other records show that he enlisted 25 February 1776 for 2 years. He received a "Land Office Warrant" for 50 acres of land to be surveyed in any county within the Commonwealth for his military service. References include "Early Settlers of Lee County VA..." Vol II by Bales, p. 435-436, "Virginia Soldiers of the American Revolution" by Eckenrode Vol 2 p. 102. Bedford Co. VA County Order Book 6, p. 276, 290. Milser Recs of Rev War Sols-- VA- 5th Regt. Roll #980. I was approved as a supplementary member through the DAR using the above service record for Thomas Ely.
