I know mostly the towns that are on Hwy 58 Ewing ,Rose Hill ,Jonesville ,Ben Hur ,Pennington and Big Stone Gap . We never have time to venture far from that path. Lots of cousins around there . The Elys apparently came to Lee county after the Revolutionary War and the first grouping was Jane smith Ely and her children. By 1820 there were 11 heads of family on the census and in 1930 65 with 38 others scattered in the state. Be fruitful and multiply was an edict they followed. Does anyone have a history of the Ely home down by the rebuilt General Joseph Martin fort and is it possible to visit the home, ie do they ever have tours or an open house? I know the fort has at least one frontier day happening each year. ---- fracur423@aol.com wrote: > I know mostly the towns that are on Hwy 58 Ewing ,Rose Hill ,Jonesville > ,Ben Hur ,Pennington and Big Stone Gap .
