Seeking more information on the early life and Civil War career of James C. WOODWARD, son of Henry and Elizabeth WOODARD (note no second "W" in his parent's name). James C. WOODWARD was born in Lee County, Va. in 1841 and died in Knoxville, Tn. in 1913. Woodward founded Woodward Heights near downtown Lexington, Ky. and sold most of that property in 1890, when he moved to Knoxville, Tn. and developed Fountain City, a resort-like suburb including a lake, park and 50-room hotel. He later owned Knoxville Business College and he and his son Hu (1880-1950) founded South-Western Publishing Co. which later moved to Cincinnati, Oh. and sold to Scott-Foresman. James C. also had two other children: Walter of New York City and Laura N. (Mrs. C.B.) Proctor of Memphis, Tn. Would like their birth and death dates, etc. Also need more information on Henry and Elizabeth WOODARD and siblings to James C. WOODWARD. J.C. Tumblin Knoxville, Tn.

Family legend has it that 3 Gibson sisters marr 3 Freeman boys( maybe brother's too) So far I have this info: Eliza Crate Gibson (Liza from above census) b. March 1865, Wise Co......marr the younger Charlie Freeman in Lee Co on 10/9/1893 her sister Adelphie "Delphie" Gibson b. 1/1878 marr James Freeman b.6/1871 in Lee Co. on 9/24/1893.. a week before her sister above her other sister Alice Gibson b. abt 1873 marr. John Freeman on 12/6/1887 in Lee Co. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? I have no proof that these men were brothers as I can't get past Charlie Freeman into the preceding generation. I do find on Charlie's marr cert that his widowed mother was named Nerveada. I have been working on the supposition that Nerveada was a misspelling of Almeda as there is a widow named Almeda Moore Freeman with a son named John floating around in a census out there. Think about it. John

There has been a mix-up about Natural Bridge. As originally stated, NATURAL BRIDGE is located in Rockbridge Co VA. NATURAL TUNNEL is located in Scott Co VA. Rockbridge is southwest of Charlottesville VA and N/NW of Lynchburg VA. It is easy to confuse place names when they are similar.
